thanks gorbie ;)
it was very kind of him and very surprising for me to have been linked.
But him and a few of my profs at my univsersity really taught me how to think and act rather than just "make it look cool."and i'm thankful for that.
I cannot find that economist article..it had to do something with world happiness index and had case studies of how people in third worl countries are far more happier ......any one know what i'm talkin about?? Vormburo....use your special search powers!!! :)

An interesting discussion but I think if try to hvae fun with what you do it will always be in style. I think making something fun will always be in trend except when the economy collapses.

there are kind of two inter-related factors here: too many stimuli creating hyperspeed evolution AND too strong a pull through and subsequent exposure by those seeking to capitalise on new and emerging trends.
the two go hand in hand and always have however those seeking and those delivering these new trends have faster and more efficient means ie. technology.
one argument is that the exposure kills the "thing" before it has grown and developed into something with real meaning.
musical examples: disco, hip-hop, house music all existed for a number of years before they existed on a recorded format, given a name, and exploited - they were allosed to grow into whole attitude and a styles of musical and social interaction for a significant number of contributors and participants. before being watered down and made formulaic based on appeal to the lowest common denominator.
this process just happens increasingly faster these days.
*rambles and drifts way off topic...i guess i'm talking more about the cultural context the designer works in

it has digressed from trends in design to finding happiness without the use of material things.

sorry for my bad typos.
- zedvox0
but i think its all related!
culture and trends are inter-related. and the whole happiness issue has to do with consumerism in which design plays a major role.
Commercial Design(in which most of us are engaged in) is one of those professions which needs a booming economy. Again using India as an example design was never a big factor. people did not pay attention desin because most of the country including the middle class was more concerned with surviving.
as more money trickles in the middle class more people want bigger houses...better lookign cars, soap with fresh forest perfume. They can AFFORD to.
It's fascinating to see how in the west people are turing to yoga and hybrid cars and giving up material goods because it all seems too well designed whereas in thrid world countries....people are goign ape over Mcdonalds, Dish T.V....basically the consumer culture 70's/80's of America .
Culture dictates Trends.
well i think its all connected.

zed - it was yor comment on india's no time or patience for sub cultures and underground music that set me off.
the "underground" has become a currency for the bourgeois masses; they want (or are told to want) all its edgy/counter culture associations yet they still want the TV, flash motor and accroutements of the capitlist society. cultural tourism.
