but i think its all related!
culture and trends are inter-related. and the whole happiness issue has to do with consumerism in which design plays a major role.
Commercial Design(in which most of us are engaged in) is one of those professions which needs a booming economy. Again using India as an example design was never a big factor. people did not pay attention desin because most of the country including the middle class was more concerned with surviving.
as more money trickles in the middle class more people want bigger houses...better lookign cars, soap with fresh forest perfume. They can AFFORD to.
It's fascinating to see how in the west people are turing to yoga and hybrid cars and giving up material goods because it all seems too well designed whereas in thrid world countries....people are goign ape over Mcdonalds, Dish T.V....basically the consumer culture 70's/80's of America .
Culture dictates Trends.
