... any of you ever just feel like giving up design and head off to a lovely small town on the beach or in the mountains and just sell ice cream, make coffee or just get away from the intense work load of the high paced design life.
I know I sure wouldnt mind heading to the mountains, snowboard all day , fish and live a real life.

Just the other week the same thread popped up. But instead of mountains, fishing and what have you it was about dropping design to be an english teacher in Japan.
I think the thread before that was about dropping design and flee to the mountains too.
Just do it. But bring your laptop. You know you want to.

I think the bottom line is - do whatever you have to do to make yourself happy.

Ya, I am thinking I will be leaving the agency life down the road, or atleast starting my own buisness down the road. Being your own boss will be a good start I think, no matter what field.
I love design, but man, even the best agencies out there.. including mine,, still come with their share of stress and no overtime for .. overtime work.
Thiings are going well though at the current job, but I do know in a few or more years,,, things are going to have to be a bit diff.Man.. if there was a law about overtime pay.. I think us designers would be millionaires

I think this kind of attitude is an everyday thing for designers myself included [see designers thread] be it either on a conscious or subconcious level that both affects our personal lives and visual output. Upon reading the responses to this thread and my own I guess the best thing to do would be to determine your level of Bullshit to put it simply. How and what kind of work do you want to do? How often do you want to do it? If you can understand these questions as they relate to your life, I say you are halfway there. If you can present your feelings in what you produce in an honest manner I think you'll be happy no matter what you choose to do with your life.

i worked as a fisherman, it was tuff job and i stank like an old vagina. Far away hills etc. You'd all miss the comforts of an office. But...The main plus of a physical job though is that when you knock off you foget about it and really feel in your bones that you have done a hard days work.

Donvitoviti I've been my own boss since i was 19 now I'm 27 and currently in the process of creating a multi faceted corporation for me and my friends to retire off of. I ask you now how long have you been in the design field and your age if its not too intrusive. Also how long the feelings of giving up?

Those battles are lived on a daily basis and neither are being made up. as was stated in the thread of designers you have to make a decision of what you want to be healthy or homeless. I have chosen healthy. The associates I have involved have been so for years seeing me both through thick and thin. none of us are perfect and all of us want to be. some of us admit it some of us don't . my companies do not harm the environment, they allow us to continue designing, however now these are products for ourselves. luckily through my experiences and connections I have the ability to publish books and games as well as prototype products for the aerospace, motor vehicle and houseware markets as well as print and distribute apparel. my efforts to turn my profits into functioning entities instead of nice cars houses and clothes has been my decision. and dont think that my major source off income being boeing tied closely to mcdonnel douglas haliburton and this war doesnt keep me up at night. it is also the source of alot of my anger. My decision to turn this cashflow into a positive non environmentally intrusive solution is something I can be proud of. On the eve [this year] of probably the largest lump sum I've ever recieved in my life, yes I do wonder what would happen if I took all of that money intended to continue to support me and mine and gave it DIRECTLY to those who need it. You dont know me please dont judge me as you do.
