i got my wife something similar to this, but hers has a tension setting so the diamond looks like it is floating - elegant and tasteful. she loved it.

go to tiffany's or a similar reputable dealer. fake diamonds are everywhere.
and don't buy online or "clarity enhanced" diamonds. that's code for fake or doctored.

sometimes, bigger stones don't mean brighter or better. If the cut isn't done right, then it loses its shine. also, there has been some companies who'd drill a hole with laser and remove visible inpurity and fill it back with clear glue.
so be careful when you buy.

Above all, DO NOT let your GF pick a ring out. DO NOT go shopping with her and pick one out together.
Does she have friends you are close to, a best friend of hers that you could approach? What about a sister? Girls talk about that stuff, she could give you some hints.
Princess cut diamonds are very popular lately.Through my GF's sister I have learned alot about what my GF wants. We happened to be in a jewelery store over the holidays and the sister was showing us the new ring she wanted.
The two very important things I learned:1) White Gold looks almost exactly like platinum, and will save you around $600 or more on the cost of the ring. That means if you had a price limit with a platinum ring, you can now afford a larger diamond(s).
2) Don't be fooled by thinking a girl absolutely needs at least a 1 carat stone.
I was surprised that 3/4 stones were as big as they are.There are good sites online:
