Funny, as part of my great urban escape plan, MI is on the short list. And Anne Arbor is a fine town. In my research there is not alot of existing design jobs there. Most are in Detroit or in the surrounding burbs. But it's not too far a commute. One thought I had was to start a design shop in AA catering to the university and healthcare industries... all they currently have are smalltime student shops ... best of luck.

yeah, figure i'll have to commute, which is cool. can't wait to have a car again! but the whole design consciousness of ann arbor, detroit, michigan is growing. make the move! ha.

i live in toledo, about 45 mins south of ann arbor. its a great town.
- tonyonetony0
any good opportunities or things going on in toledo? i'll cross state lines...

Yea, housing and general cost of living is about 40% lower than the DC area. Don't get a pokey car, as the Motor city folks like to drive real fast. I'm routinely passed doing 80mph up there. Organic in Detroit was hiring recently. check em out.

Hey man... I run The Royal from Ann Arbor...though we're moving operations to Brooklyn (or Toledo if I get my way...) soon.
Hit me up when you're in town, I show you around.
There are some good design shops...but no good design work. Royal Oak has some good firms but like you said, it's a quick commute. Why live in Michigan if you don't want to drive.

ann arbor is pricey.. toledo is dirt fucking cheap. not a lot of work.. but if your resourcefull freelance is an easy option.
- tonyonetony0
thanks man...i'll definitely give a call/write. i'll be there in mid/late march. i'm more of a project manager than designer but also want to do voiceovers. for real. ha.
i miss driving! getting a VW GTI...that's the goal.
- bgheen0
Yup...that's exactly why I want to move.
I'm considering leaving after my lease on my 2-bedroom ends and buying one of these
http://www.bartleylofts.com/indeā¦That or I could buy a box in Brooklyn.
- bgheen0
Sounds good man...look forward to chatting.
My advice is to save your cash and buy a different car! (Sorry, I was born in Dearborn and hate VWs!)
- tonyonetony0
i'm from detroit originally, so i understand....but those have always held a special place for me and now i may be able to get one.....i'll see what's up when i'm there though. damn excited to leave ny though.

Also, wait and see where you work. You don't always have to work at the automotive companies to get the discount.
Many places give their employees supplier rates.

hey bgheen, how do you handle submissions to your mag? (i see that it says closed right now) i design jewelry, michigan native myself, and just trying to get myself out there . . .
- tonyonetony0
true...thanks. first get there, get a job, then come the car, the real place to live, etc. (staying at 'rents house at first...the dream and the nightmare all together.)
- bgheen0
Cindsoo,
Yeah, I had to shut it down temporily because I feel like an asshole when I get too many emails to reply to quickly. It was taking me 5-6 weeks to reply to all the submissions.
Maybe i'm stupid, but I'd rather not accept submissions than not answer or have some impersonal auto-reply.
I also can't give you special treatment just cause you're local...sorry, I know that makes me sound like a dick....but I want to make sure its fair for everyone.
Join the newsletter, I'll be letting people know when the submissions are back up.
Good luck, I'm excited to see your work.
