Hey man... I run The Royal from Ann Arbor...though we're moving operations to Brooklyn (or Toledo if I get my way...) soon.
Hit me up when you're in town, I show you around.
There are some good design shops...but no good design work. Royal Oak has some good firms but like you said, it's a quick commute. Why live in Michigan if you don't want to drive.
