fadeproof, I could really give you about 10 dozen sites that are what I consider "good" design and explain why if you really were supposedly so ignorant of good and bad web design. I'd like to help you, but I can't believe that's the case...right?

very nice of you, btw.

I tried to cover the more common sense, objectively measured stuff. Things like style, well I won't make recommendations, but I don't like the large "3d" buttons and curves all over.

fadeproof gives as good as he gets elsewhere... so I wouldn't worry that you're hurting his feelings... he does need to get his nose out of his sites arse though... perhaps he has been working on it for too long (though I get the reverse reaction... that I can't stand a site I working on if I spend too long on it)

I agree with saves first post I'm afraid. If you post here you will get honest responses, there's no beating around the bush.
Having siad that, I will give you a few comments/pointers.
For starters
"clients are 50-somethings with little to no computer savvy skills...". This makes me think that you have not catered for the client at all. I am running a 56k and after the 4th/5th preloader bar I clicked away, I imagine that your clients may have the same issue?.On the preloader page the type looks distorted on "lexington Ave" is this delibarate? If it is, I wouldn't, this is an editing studio, I imagine the do not want to be seen as rough around the edges, keep it clean. Plus why do you need all those counters on the loading page, a simple progress bar with percentage would surfice.
Ditch the pop-ups. Within those pop-ups is a scroll bar, you may want to look at you page sizes again. I would also look at resetting the type, it's really dull and basic.
On the homepage your rounded corners are all shapes and sizes. If you have to use them (which I wouldn't) make sure they flow together. Rouded corners are used to add softness to a page, not make you eye jump all over the shop.
I would also ditch the beval and emboss effect on your buttons.
Plus where is a discription of what these guys do?
Finally, the animations are very primative on your home page, looks like this site arrived at the birth of flash.
Sorry to be harsh but this is the best I can do, as I say I only got as far as the home page cause of the preloaders.
look at:
http://www.spin.co.uk/ (flash)
http://www.chemset.net/ (CSS, HTML) for a clean look.Good luck :)
