Mac mini talking:

i need at least two G5's to design on, i mean i put them on the side next to each other and then there's just enough space for my sketching paper!
i mean the mac mini could be a handy portable alternative to hold small papers to sketch on..
i dunno..

Just make sure you get GOOD RAM, crucial or someone else recommended. I was talking to our Apple tech and he had a 17 Powerbook with him that was sent to Apple for repairs. Turns out it was the cheap RAM that was causing random shutdowns.
Don't buy cheap-o RAM. Oh and buy a putty knife, cuz that's what you'll need to open it up.

man.. for once its acctually cheaper to get the upgraded RAM on the mini, than it is on crucial. Interesting.

"Memory installation is pretty easy, considering it uses regular desktop 184-pin DDR DIMMs (you still need to buy Mac specific memory - G4 or G5 memory will work because the motherboard is quite sensitive to the SPD on modules)."
Sweeet.

For the money (and the fact it'll cost you more to upgrade the ram) why not just buy a better spec PC or do you want a Mac still?
My understanding is that the mac mini isn't aimed at this type of use, more the basic home user type than someone doing more intensive work but I guess if you spend hundreds on it and then have to bump up the ram too then it should be fine.

pc makers use cheap parts, the minimac is loaded with better hardware and comes with killer software package (that you can actually use-unlike pcs). if you buy a minimac, max out the ram, buy a off the shelf monitor keep it all under $1k, as a designer, you could easily make $10k or more this year and you should be able to afford a g5 laptop by this time next year...

$599
+ $325 1gb ram
+ $100 superdrive
+ $79 wifi
= $1,103 + tax + s&hand you get a whopping 32mb card and no monitor and no keyboard or mouse. But a very cool looking computer it is. I wouldn't say its the best bang for your buck however.

(Jan 26 05, 14:21)Well if you're just going to jack the specs up to that of a high(er) end system you can't expect to still pay so little. It's that bit about having cake and eating it too.

it takes standard ram, dorks.

Also.. check out Apples Refurb section. ... it is in the online store.. bottem right.. there is a big red tag.
I got my powerbook there for 800 less.

hmmmm...
now i'm back to thinking i should just save up a bit more and get the G5...
damn..
anyhow..i totally appreciate the advice guys..
if someone has anything else positive to say about the mini, i sure would like to hear it...

i was wondering the same thing. but it only has 1 slot anyway.. so even the crucial price will be high
- BonSeff0
i wonder if crucial makes a ram stick for them
- Donvitoviti0
PS. shipping is free on them currently.. so that does save almost 100
- Donvitoviti0
if you get the mac mini its only really worth getting if you get 512 of ram.
getting it with 1 gig of ram makes the price too high. and might as well save up and get the low end G5 tower
- exador10
damn..
i thought i could just waltz into bestbuy and pick one up:(
