so 160.000 dead and people are donating like never before and it's a very good thing but what about the other people around the world?
alone in africa 150.000 people die every weeek from aids, violence and hunger but nobody seems to make tv marathons or charity games to inspire people to donate for the africans. No stars to donate a million for them neither. It seems like africa needs to get hit by mother nature for people to turn an eye over there.
ok carry on

the media should create a fake disaster there.
- canuck0
* Yeah, but Africa is not supplying enough of the worlds cheap labour.
It is sad that there has to be a big natural disaster that gets major publicity for people & countries to make donations. It should be happening all year round. Obviously these rich western hemisphere countries have the money. I think the public just has to be more vocal.

AIDS in Africa exceeds any reasonable means of control. It'd take years and years and years of foreign intervention to turn around a people that cannot help themselves.

AIDs drugs are actually cheap to produce, its these damn multinationals who are not willing to sell their drugs under a generic name. Yeah, I understand that they put a lot of money into R&D but, it should be made available.

people in the 3rd world also need to be educated.
btw, where is the 2nd world?
- kezza_20
Over a million people die each year of Malaria. The Monsoons in india and Bangladesh kill hundreds of thousands each year, Aids is going to wipe out generations all over the world. Poverty is respnsible for roughly 50 million deaths each year worldwide.
The best thing anyone can do is campaign to eradicate 3rd world debt and maybe just maybe things will get better.

so what are you saying, its not worth the cause?
- fate0
2nd world ended when the Soviet Union collapsed.

After you undercut the millions in research and development and time spent securing patents and passing a new drug for sale on an international level...who do you sell the incredibly cheap AIDS vaccines to? The corrupt government that do not make a dent in the spread of HIV by cheap, more effective means like education and contraception? No. The health care organizations that can't even afford the drugs at a cheap price? No. The people themselves? Hell no.

So no 2cent, I don't think it's worth it re:Africa. In the case of SE Asian relief, the support is designed to get them back on their feet. That's why much of the monetary support is in loan form, to help them help themselves. This is obviously not effective in Africa.

you sell them to donors. fate.

and tell em to mix in a condom

I was in Toys R Us yesterday and at the counter they were selling bloons for $1.50AU and donating 50c from each purchase to an appeal. So they were keeping $1 for themselves! Does that seem wrong to anyone else?? I mean how much can a bloon cost to manufacture? 2cents? Even if they gave $1.30 surely they would still make some money. Seems like they're trying to make a profit out of someone elses misfortune..

Me and a couple of friends once talked to a girl who had just came back after spending a few months in Botswana. She used to be a volunteer for some humanitarian institution there. The most shocking thing she said was the age of sexual initiation of females in this part of Africa. It is often about one year. Yes, we asked her and she repeated: One year of age. Little girls are being raped because there's a common belief that an intercourse with a virgin cures AIDS.

they really do need to be educated. that story is crazy.

Not sure if you guys have noticed but there's been significant amounts of attention to the aids crisis in Africa in the last few years.
Celebreties and all. Bono has been heading up work there, there was a big concert with nelson mandella, beyonce, bono, bunch of other bands and big wigs last year? got the dvd but can't remember it.
also Jubilee 2000, got SO MUCH debt reduced from countries that have 1st world debt owing. There's also the new push I believe to enforce that debt removal from countries that promised it. So there is heaps of stuff going on at the moment yeah :) Which is great! Obviously overshadowed by the tsunami but still happening.

oh didn't a company recently say they would provide cheaper AIDS drugs to African nations? I thought I heard that, could be wrong :)
drop the debt: jubilee 2000.

of course, Africa and the really, really poor countries they could give a flying fuck about.
Think Rwanda: Number of men, women and children killed in Rwanda, mostly by being hacked to death with machetes: 800,000.

Gents, no offense, your data is a little off, I lived in Southern Africa for nearly 4 years. 95% in a rural setting. That story about virgin babies and kids being forced into intercourse is total BS. Check 'Urban Legends' African style.
You hear it all over among other BS techniques for curing the HIV.Bottomline, no organization is going to come in and tell a group of people to where condoms and then them do it. Not going to happen, especially in a rural community or shanty town.
