sorry mevsthem, design is not art even if it draws from the creative resources of the art world. Design is measured by results. There is such a thing as good and bad design.

np, and I don't want anyone to think I'm on the hatorade, I'm trying to be respectful of his work, but the site, the trend...pisses me off.

what do you like fate?

The site you linked using drop-list nav. uses it in a very bad way. I think it works here though: http://www.fellowdesigners.se/ and the old http://www.2x4.org was really good.

Imo the hello muller site got good/simple design but considering the amount of work it lacks functionality and doesn't work with that kind of nav.

What sites do I like? I like MLVR's site, I like:
http://www.mlvr.com
http://www.firstbornmultimedia.c…
http://www.visia.ca
http://www.margecasey.com/

keep your eyes on your prize and back off other peoples efforts.

hmm the hello muller site gives me a freaking headache. I think his typo is too loose for the eye. There are absolutely no distinct areas for my eye to escape to, they are just constantly searching the page for where to go. I'm speaking of his portfolio page. Maybe making his links or the titles to his entries a different color would have been a happy way to solve it.
It's a nice site, just fucks with my head. And the first one (smpl) I actually really like minus the fact that the portfolio plays ontop of that electrical tape...kind of annoying and his choice in text size is too small.

BonSeff, you're right.

well... the idea behind my site is that its a catalogue. hence the non-distinct listing of work. Its just a list (and yes, i could've highlighted item titles, but i purposfully chose not to). And i do agree that at the moment the portfolio section is getting too long. But besides that, it doesn't really matter what people think about it. I'm happy with the site, people who visit the site are happy with it, and the _main reason behind the design is the work; not the site design itself.
And fate, I didn't design the site that way because its 'trendy' or 'hot'. I've been designing like that for a long time, and will continue to do so.

hello muller. *waves*

i just think its wasted energy calling out others work. we all have only so many hours in the day to lay down design on screen, paper, canvas etc..
we do the best we can in a ton of different ways, trendy - retro whatever..
- abizzyman0
s'all subjective.

Bonseff,as ever..you right..
much repect for everyone who's putting work outthere :)

BonSeff: This turned out to be a decent thread though (in comparsion with the other active threads any way:-). And in general I think it's our responsibility to crit things, the same way I write here if I like something I should be able to do it when I don't as well. But I think it is important to be constructive, not insulting/offending anyone and also respect that people are on different levels both in knowledge and taste. But in the smpl.be case I think it is ok to say that you don't like the guys site because it doesn't do his work the justice it deserves.

yeah true... crits are always good. and as long as they make a valid point i'm more than happy to receive it.
