DUDE!!! i thought the world enjoyed the life and work of people like neville brody and david carson to let us move on from rules and regs. I completely understand what you mean about the small type and minimalisim used so much since 2000 in design but then we celebrate it just as much as we celebrate using crazily difficult to navigate sites because its freedom of expression.
- smpl0
danny_shark, that's true but there's a difference between comercial sites and non-commercial one's
- DaveId0
i like smpl's site.
we like to think in black and white terms (good/bad design) when it comes to "measuring results" because that's what we're trained to do. and when it comes to being hired to achieve some sort of result, that training is indespensible.
BUT: denying that there is a gigantic grey area is silly.
for example, I have a partner that i work with to develop record covers, exhibition monographs, posters, and such. and the main criteria is that it be "fucked". we develop a peice and then ask, "is this fucked?" if it's too clear, or understandable, then it won't work. Peaople come to expect the work to be fucked, they buy it because it's fucked, and his career depeds on making sure that his work is fucked.
it's the best work i've ever done.
so there's your "purposefully bad" for you.

i love this thread...

what's wrong with that site?
compared to yours for example.
- MLVR0
I don't like that site, however some of the illustrations are pretty good and at least it contains something in difference with yours that both lacks content and good design.
:-)

I'm not talking about his work, I'm tired of the "so minimalist it hurts" design trend. I do not see anyone outside of a small circle of designers enjoying using that website.
- mevsthem0
??? are you talking about using small fonts? mabe ur at a to high resolution.
- mevsthem0
FireFox Ctrl++ size up Ctrl+- size down
- MLVR0
The style isn't very unique. It's very easy to navigate though. I don't like the way that the site background interfere with the portfolio content.
- danny_shark0
but why the hell should there be? why cant apples site look like your site, and your site like apples site, call me a hippie but i thought we all started graphic design and art in general to able to change the worlds view into a better one, personally im sick of my tutors telling me my type is out of focus or that the colours bleed in to the background!!! sorry! forgot to say ur works nice and fresh, good to c new ideas ;)

MLVR, now your website is a beautiful example of minimalism and clarity. That other one just looks like laziness.
- tuig0
ahum thats a friend of mine, and his minimalistic is just his way of life...
i really like these sites, but he should have done it in dreamweaver, basic html...
- fate0
tuig, not trying to single out the dude, I'm just whining about a trend I hate seeing. He does his work a disservice with the horrid web design.
- tuig0
laziness? no way ....
he is profoundly theoretic about graphic design.his knowledge about it sometimes blows me away...
- tuig0
i don't think its horrid,fate...
it does need some adjusting--the typo in the info section is bad i admit...
- tuig0
so what yo think of the site of another friend of mine
- tuig0
but then again what do i know about making websites.. i'm a motion designer ;)
- fate0
Are these guys new to the web, tuig? They seem to do great print work @ hellomuller, but why on earth did they decide to make 5 pages of 3 columns of link after link of black-on-white text that just pops up in a new window?! It's frustrating as hell. As is these types of navigation:
