The movie isn't as good (obviously) if you watch a bad quality version of it, as I did. It was pretty funny, but it's definitely dumb-humour. Or whatever you call it. The humour is similar to Zoolander, which I thought was hilarious. There have been a lot of movies over these past few years based on dumb-humour.

i don't think zoolander's comedy is anything like napoleon dynamite's comedy. zoolander is over-the-top stupidity... napoleon dynamite is believable. i think that's a big enough difference right there.

the best thing about Napolean is like you just said, the charactars are believeable and their personalities are all funny, charming, stupid, in their own way. I love that you can't tell what decade you're in either because they live in the middle of BFE. I saw it three times in the theater. Great date movie.

Mormon humor because the directors are mormon and it takes place in a predominantly mormon town in Idaho.
Mormon humor is almost an oxymoron, they are certainly one of the most humorless groups of cultists anywhere.
Fuck mormons and fuck this shit ass movie. When will you people learn that MTV Productions translates into pure and utter vomitous shit cakes?!

hey pugdawg, i'm mormon and i work at mtv and i liked this movie.
i do NOT like when people spell 'dog' - 'dawg'. I hated it in 1990 and i still hate it 14 years later.
i loved when napoleon closes the trapperKeeper, i used to think those were so cool in junior high.

In response to the Mormon criticism...I have known quite a few Mormons in my lifetime and have to admit they were among some of the most genuinely fuinny people I have ever met. Genuine because they don't feel the need to prove themselves as cool somehow, so their humor is sincere and quite playful, and never mean-spirited.
And, I loved the movie!

this hit home for me as well. there were several kids like this at my school. they were very socially akward. you'd just kind of sit there and watch them while they stared at the ground with their mouths gaping open like drool was waiting to spill. they were so used to being picked on that any attempt to talk to them would be met with this distrusting and hasty response. however, if you could earn their trust, you'd find that they were very passionate about the most obscure things - like fictional medieval/fantasy characters, etc. napolean dynamite captured this socially inept class very well.

hehe yeah I saw this last week. Didn't want to drag this thread out of the closet, but since mitsu's punk ass went ahead and did it I'll go ahead and take this opportunity to say *stands up and cheers*...great flick.
I felt almost bad for laughing at them during the movie because I too knew a lot of people like this at the high schools I went to. Nice enough people, somehow to escape the torture its like they found a safe place in their minds. Cool flick though...his gf was the haute.

when i first saw it i thought it was dumb. me and my brother thought that black internet gf was gonna turn out to be a man.
then the next day i could stop thinking about it and lol'ing. so i had to watch it again and eventually buy it.
my fav is when the kid runs over the tupperware and is like " shit!
its up there with the wes andersons for me.
