this hit home for me as well. there were several kids like this at my school. they were very socially akward. you'd just kind of sit there and watch them while they stared at the ground with their mouths gaping open like drool was waiting to spill. they were so used to being picked on that any attempt to talk to them would be met with this distrusting and hasty response. however, if you could earn their trust, you'd find that they were very passionate about the most obscure things - like fictional medieval/fantasy characters, etc. napolean dynamite captured this socially inept class very well.
