if you were to buy a laptop over the next few months what would you get. uses would be all over the place from PS to CAD, flash to AE...basically i need a fast machine. was waiting til the G5 laptops came out, but it looks like jobs will not announce them on Jan. 11th, like i'd hoped. I'm open to any suggestions PC or Mac.
thanks folks.

i would go with a sony....really like their stuff.

actually, i had a really bad experience with a sony laptop. I had my harddrive fail 3 times, screen died after 3 yrs. The graphic card was kinda crappy.
now, i have powerbook. much happier.

i have a pb and use powercadd with adobe software, runs like a champ.

im a photographer running ps cs, ills, dreamweaver, and a bunch more.
get a pb, jack up the ram, and you will feel and look like a pro.

i bought a sony vaio s150 a while back. works like a dream.
pentium m 1.6ghz
1gb of ram (i upgraded it)
100gb hdd (again, i upgraded)
32mb ati radeon 9200gentoo linux 2004.3
nice machine.
i looked at alienware and apple powerbooks as well.
if money isn't an object...alienware or powerbook.
i'm buying a powerbook next year when the new models are released.
mmm. gentoo will run smooth on that.

I have a friend who works at Apple and he is saying all signs are pointing to G5 powerbooks at Macworld in Jan
If i were you i would wait.

what carty said..
industry... that would be crazy... but i highly doubt it

Ya.. i have also heard some stuff about G5 lappys soon.
I guess they are carrying around disguised laptop test models everywhere there.

I have a 3Ghz Dell 9100 and a 1.5Ghz Powerbook. I like em both equally and would recommend both. Altho the powerbook is a lot more attractive, I like the hi-res screen on the Dell more. Performance wise, the dell is about 10-15% faster. But is that edge worth carrying around a 10lbs, 2in thick notebook? Nope.

I just bought an ACI Raven, it's not as pretty as a powerbook, but damn it's fast, doesn't weigh much either.

i've got a 15inch powerbook with 1.2 giga ram and i lust say i'm very happe with.
ps.i yer gonna buy,get a coolpad.

I'm more than happy with this Sager:
http://pctorque.com/3790.phpw/ 2 gigs of ram
It's identical to Voodoo m380. (though without Voodoo sticker so it costs a lot less).
Honestly, Sony and Apple are cute, but they don't compare as far as specs go (like ATI 9700 and 1920x1200 screen res). If you want something that will compare with a desktop, get a Sager.
- tuig0
apple is cute hmmm....
- sparker0
but, for me that's the thing i *don't* want my notebook to compare to a desktop. the purpose of a notebook is portability. sure, you want some power behind the machine so you can get work done, but if i wanted a desktop...i'd buy a desktop and sit at home and do my work.
i refuse to buy a notebook over a certain size. it has to be around an inch thick, light, and it must be sturdy. the vaio's and alienware's have magnesium casing. making them a bit more rigid than others.
i still don't understand the feasibility of a 17" notebook that weighs 6+ lbs. useless.
if you want to show clients work at a better scale, then make the investment in a projector. that will look a bit more professional, imo.

Didn't mean to knock Apples - I love G5's. Especially as apple/windows wars are really boring.
But personally I wouldn't buy a powerbook. The screen res is pretty poor, amongst other things. But if you like it, get one.
- tuig0
screen res poor? nah..but ok.
i use a dell as desktop, hardly ever use it anymore cause the powerbook just rockin'

everything's relative
