to put it simply, he's not trying to communicate with you. he's trying to sell peices of burnt wood to pretentios art officianados.
according to "group socialization theory" as described by Judith Rich Harris in "The Nurture Assumption", he's just conforming to the norms of his group. we all speak the same dialect as the peers we are constantly emulating.
Have any of you ever tried to support yourself by making art and selling it in galleries? if you're not able to conform to the norms and speack the language you're fucked.
yes, "art-speak" is pretentious. yes, "fine-art" is largely an academic pursuit because institutional support is the only way fine-art production can be financially viable. yea, that truly sucks. but frankly, he's not talking to you. he's talking to the kind of people he thinks might buy his art.
i thought you guys understood marketing? that's what it is. we're just the wrong demographic.
think about how we respond to anyone (especially here) who doesn't speak our language.

This may be off course for this thread, or where it's gone, but...
One thing everyone needs to keep in mind is the historic nature of theory, critics, artists, and architects. It's a somewhat symbiotic relationship, albeit a little offset sometimes.
Unlike webdesign and current graphic design, art and architecture (which I am more familiar with, having 7 years of arch theory crammed into me) have relied upon theory and the critics, and vice versus. Obviously, critics need artists to critique, but artists also need a connection to the public and something to respond to (not always, but it does work this way).
Take for example Duchamp and his/their reaction to critics. If it weren't for the critics, we wouldn't have had one of the most significant changes in art this century.Then there is Decon, which is a little more than just 'deconstructing' things. Try reading some Derrida or the many people that pulled apart his work. This theory coincided with one of the most significant changes in architecture this century as well.
Just saying, some people spew bs, but sometimes there is meaning and thought there.
*not supporting the quote, by the way, just had to say something...and on the note of decon, there is at least one reference that I can think of on a site(great site - should have left the quote off, though) that I do think is a on the bs side
