How much do you people usually add on print costs as mark up? We normally do 35% on top but we got a really low quote so Ive added 65% and its still cheaper than the other quotes, is this alright as long as the client is happy or am I ripping him off?

You are ripping them off, what is the reason for the mark up? is it for liasing with the printers... or is it simply because you can, or because you haven't costed enough for your design work in the first place? and they'd run a mile if they had to pay your realistic design costs?

Yeah they basically know nothing about the cost of print, plus the quote was really fucking cheap (which makes me worry about the quality of print). but yeah were trying to price it all so that they think our design costs are v reasonable, and make up for it on the print mark up.
Am I a crook?

Charge some print management time but don't mark up the print costs, cheeky bastards.
- JamesEngage0
Any print jobs we have done we just let the client pay the printers direct... can't be doing with the hassle.

Everyone I know puts mark up on print! Its not that cheeky.
I think im just trying to justify it to myself arent I? Im in denial :(

20%

We have the client billed directly, therefore don't mark it up. We try to factor print bidding and supervision into our design costs.

mark up cost are normal here in italy, everybody knows about it, but is average 5-10%
not 35!!!!
basically if client goes to a random printer "X".
"X" give a price of 10so designer goes to his fav printer "Y" and says look "X" asked 10 for this job what is your quote?
"Y" says this is a 8 job,
designer says ok we ask for 9at the end
client is happy because he pay less than the first quote"Y" get what he wants
designer gets 1 for doing nothing
all this because italian are bastards, real cost of work is average 6.
does it make sense?
- MX_OnD0
ma che it costs 6?
Disgraziato!

I've always marked up printing 20%, especially if I am the one handling all the print management (getting quotes, press checks, etc.)
Your time is worth something, right?

most of the printers I work with offer to mark up like 10% or so... and then either cut me a check or just make it up to me when I get my own stuff printed. I usually take it on my own stuff....
- pancakeweb0
20% also. I bill for my pre-press and press check time in the design, but also mark up the printing.
Listen, one day you're going to totally fuck up a print piece and it's going to be on your head. That 20% is to be set aside to cover yourself in the future.
Things happen and you can't always blame the printer, your client won't care. They'll just want it right. It's kind of a savings account for print work in my opinion.

Forgot to add that it's also helpful when you pay the printer and then your client decides to delay paying you.
You can write the checks from your "print markup" fund.
