Hi. I did a search on this but didn't find the answer I'm looking for. I have about 100 stills that were created in Photoshop and we need to adjust the color balance so that the whites and oranges work well for tv broadcast. Is there a quick way to do this?

have you got final cut pro? you need to adjust them whilst looking at a waveform monitor and vectorscope. otherwise some tv stations have a very expensive piece of kit called a "legaliser" that does it automatically but it can make your graphics look shit so it's better to do it yourself.

no, not final cut pro. Have AE though. Someone just told me that all I have to do is adjust the output levels in PS to 16/235 and batch it. Sound right?

sounds about right. the waveform monitor & vectorscope in fcp is so you can check whether your level adjustments worked in getting rid of any illegal colours/luminance. does your stuff have to pass any QA testing?

Wouldnt Converting your stills with a broadcast safe color in PS do the trick?

clamp the brightness to 215 RGB in photoshop using Levels (input & output to 217)
- chach0
hehe sorry, that's RGB 217

chach, do I have to change both input and output? why 215? I thought 235 was the limit for tv?

which post production company are you giving it to I could tell you how to supply it if you like is it uk or not uk?.

Enter response: make sure the stills are 720 x 486 output levels are clamped betwwn 16 and 235
- chossy0
are you sure the width is correct wraith lord??.
Ok monkey RGB and don't worry about the 255 levels if they are too 'hot' the ditor can sort them all out with his/her mixer and or video levels on the timeline. I never ever worry about stills from photoshop they have always been broadcast safe, I have a legaliser but rarely it is needed. Are you using digi beta decks or what format will it be broadcast in?.

I will do some tests tomorrow and give you a definate answer ok :)

Yes the size is correct
720 X 540 is NTSC D1 square pixel aspect ratioPAL D1 Square pixel is 768x 576
NTSC D1 rectangular is 720 486
PAL rectangular D1 is 720x576
you are right thought, the editor can legalize the video and make the proper adjustmens

215 is what we used for all our keyable standard def graphics (ntsc)
