Straight from the horses ass, great words from a man who bankrupted his own company that paid his employees peanuts and tried to create an internship program where people paid HIM to intern at HIS studio. Oh yes, the original fat bastard of Canadian design.

i thought it was a good show...very optimistic.
gave me hope...which is in short supply these days.
- DutchBoy0
word, greedo.
who cares about interns anyway?
this is about the world!
;P

the exhibit was great, lots of huge helvetica, cool old computers, and i really liked the sustainable building materials such as bamboo flooring.
overall i was very impressed.
the walmart streamline process blew me away.

Yes, Massive Change...
Went to this show two weeks ago, and while well worth it and provoking half the time I spent in there I questioned the intent of it...
It's advertised as an open minded look at the place of design in the future, but much of the stuff I looked at left me thinking how much of it was really just a product push?
They had one of those Segway's there, letting people try it out and use it. While I think it may have it's purpose it looked more like it was a sales job to a lot of people who would never need to use it.
makes you wonder if segway paid to have it in the show. There were many other examples of product in the show as well.
To top it all off, and the end of the damn thing there is a friggin' gift shop! And to top it off you spend all this time in the show looking at taking the visual out of design, and exploring ideas like "cradle to cradle" (no waste, completely recyclable) design.
At the end there's a damn giftshop featuring your typically eyecandy design products, photo books, and it's all wrapped in completely unsustainable and unrecyclable cellophane plastic.
Plus, at the beginning of the whole show there is a big sign showing that American Express sponsors it.
It is advertised as an objective look at what design can be for the world this century, but really it just left me objectively questioning the pureness of motive of the whole event...

woah, just noticed jk extended that post a bit!
- DutchBoy0
spiralstarez,
in the end i feel that is jsut the "packaging" to make it more appealing to a wide audience. (ie mass consuming audience).
als showing finished products can make the effects of invention and design more visible.
- sherman0
the gift shop was a bit much.
- DutchBoy0
i can believe that.
anyway, is it coming to Europe?
- sherman0
My guess is that it will travel all over the world?
I believe it was commissoned by the Vancouver Art Gallery in conjunction with Bruce Mau?I'm happy that I actually got to see something of cultural intrest in my neck of the woods. Seems like anything interesting is out east or in europe.

I don't mean to rag on the guy, it's just a matter of practicing what ya preach. I think the whole Massive Change thing is very neccesary and a great entity...I whole-heartedly support the effort, just lose the fat-ass poster boy. Cleanup your own backyard Mr.Mau!!
- DutchBoy0
yeah.
you know, noone in this biz can be declared holy.
how many architects and archi-interns i heard talk about Koolhaas for instance.. nothing but shite.. "you'd be treated like a slave" etc. etc.
it is their subjects and writings that keep me interested though.
same goes for Mau.
btw. these two cats collaborated once on S,M,L,XL

bruce, rem, those guys have all these ideologies. but when it comes down to it, they are somewhat hypocrites.
though it's a good thought provoking reading, i'd never work for those guys.
