I watched Pink Floyd's The Wall for the first time in ten years last night. I was at this cafe studying and they showed it on a giant screen they pulled down from the ceiling. There were 10 of us, 6 dirtheads who must have hotboxed for an hour before coming in (and who annoyingly kept going outside to talk on their phones), myself, and 3 girls who worked there.
I have to admit, in my early college days this was a seminal film for me, something groundbreaking in my dazed mind-so in a way I was curious to see if it was still watchable. Last night my worst fears were confirmed. The film is just too much, and it was really hard to sit through. The animation remains first rate, but the rest is quite silly---shaving eyebrows, trying on Dad's war uniform, the rockstar smashing his hotel room. Even the music, minus Confortably Numb, sounds rather stale. I don't recall having listened to the album in years, and once I'm broke enough, it will be the first on my 'To sell" list, which is in a way kinda sad, but unfortunately, these things happen.
Oh well.

Pink Floyd is a great band, but the Wall is not their finest hour.
It is their most famous though.
The concept I don't think, was strong enough to carry through for 2 records of material and a movie.
I think the band did its best work on Animals followed closely with Saucer full of Secrets and Ummagumma.
A better movie is the Live in Pompeii. Its a concert film made in Italy with a "spirit" audience.

imho there hasn't been any other band like PF -- what they did until 1972 was far ahead of what other bands were doing back then. But that was before they decided to go seriously into making money.
Maybe it's difficult to evaluate them properly today.

Animals? I think that is one of their worst albums! "Dogs" is good but gets old quick.

Dark side of the moon still goes into my cd player from time to time and i enjoy it every time

i listen to animals the most. great band.

dark side is amazing, but so is the wall.
whats funny about dark side is that its music to take some lsd to, but the band was all f'ed up on heroin when they made it, not psychedelics. in fact, david gilmour didnt even do that much of the doses.

Wish you were here is the best acoustic song ever bar none.
The wall is meant to be watch off your chops, cause they were making it. Not a movie, more a background to the album.

I use to listen to Amused to death by Roger Waters, but i smoked too much pot once while having it on and it freaked me out, never played it again after that!

I didn't mean to imply that I don't like Pink Floyd anymore, just that I've outgrown The Wall--particularly the film. Animals, Wish You Were Here, Dark Side, even a Momentary Lapse of Reason are all incredible artistic achievements. The Wall is a brilliant concept, it's just hard for me to digest in my current state.

Its just an extended music video.

I think it has a lot to do with what our subcautious is exposed to these days in normal every day life. Nothing is shocking anymore. action, sex, violence... we are all imuned to it. So, what may have been cool or interesting to your virgin eyes back then somehow becomes bland and boring over a long period of time.

1. The Wall is half great. Songs like Comfortably Numb, Run Like Hell, Is There Anybody Out There, and Hey You helped define their career. As a whole, it's a little shaky, especially when playing agains the overbearing film that was made.
2. Dark Side Of The Moon is a good unit, but it sure ain't the band's finest moment. They wrote better songs and played better.
3. Animals---rocks my world!! Such a great monstrous machine the band became during this time.
4. The Final Cut. Anyone here listened to this much? When I first heard it, I was saddened by how the sound reflected the band's then-disjointedness. But now it may be my second favorite disc of theirs (even though it's really Waters') next to Meddle.
5. Amused To Death. What a powerful fucking album. Again, like the wall, it's a little too much to support at times, but some of those songs are phenomenal.
6. The Division Bell--Good God I love and dispise it. Take It Back and Coming Back to Life are such fucking top shelf tracks! I only wish he'd had help with lyrics from Waters...
After watching this procession of output over the years, I assume most of us are disappointed with how it's ended. What is Gilmour doing??
Roger Waters has recently put out his latest political rally-for-a-cause batch of songs. They're shit to my ears. He's lost his touch.
Check them out if you haven't already:

The Wall is one of the greatest album.
Quality albums with this originality is hard to find these days.
Pink Floyd is one the greatest band of all time.
The Wall is one of my favorit album of my life.
The Wall (the movie), I really love this movie. A lot.
You can dont like to listen Pink Floyd, but NO ONE can say that Pink Floyd is not a great band.

I always found that watching the wall age 15 on heavy doses of acid, in someones garage along with regular hits of butane gas and bongs made for pretty good if echoey fun.
