a friend of mine is thinking about buying an ibook. he's also got some tables and would like to get more into sound production. i don't know much about this stuff but i was hoping someone here might. what are some good apps that aren't too pricey? should he go with an ibook or get a powerbook? thanks

i have bunch of friends who are audio designer/audio engineer and they all have powerbook.
i guess a lot of music apps eat up CPU and memory so powerbook is the way to go.

cool. what kind of software are they using?

i don't know the names of the apps they're running. i'll ask a few of them (one of them is a professional audio designer so i would assume a lot of his apps are expensive stuff, but the other friend is just doing it for fun so his apps may be reasonably-priced stuff).
i'll post later.

john, depends on exactly what you want to do? Musical sequencing, actualy recording and production, editing, etc.? For Mac's Logic and Pro Tools are good for recording, mixing and editing. For production, let's say on the electronic side, designing synth lines and beats, Propellerheads' Reason is very nice. :)

okay, here's the answer from my friend:
"Pro Tools is a real industry standard program for music production.
I hate to recommend and plug them, because as far as computer based audio
systems go, they own the monopoly. But anyway, their products are awfully
expensive except for their one hardware/software system the 'Mbox'http://www.digidesign.com/ Go to products; Mbox
I think it's still selling at just under $500. It comes with Pro Tools LE
software. It's been out for a few years so it's probably easy to find a used
system for sale. If whoever does end up going with this option, I
recommend replacing the usb cable that comes with the Mbox. I had some
glitches that were fixed by switching to a shorter, thicker usb cable. The
recording quality of this box is the same as their most expensive units. I
swear I don't work for the company, nor care to give them any more business."
