okay, here's the answer from my friend:
"Pro Tools is a real industry standard program for music production.
I hate to recommend and plug them, because as far as computer based audio
systems go, they own the monopoly. But anyway, their products are awfully
expensive except for their one hardware/software system the 'Mbox'http://www.digidesign.com/ Go to products; Mbox
I think it's still selling at just under $500. It comes with Pro Tools LE
software. It's been out for a few years so it's probably easy to find a used
system for sale. If whoever does end up going with this option, I
recommend replacing the usb cable that comes with the Mbox. I had some
glitches that were fixed by switching to a shorter, thicker usb cable. The
recording quality of this box is the same as their most expensive units. I
swear I don't work for the company, nor care to give them any more business."
