Those of you working 9-5, 8-5 or similar, what does your average day look like? When do you get up? When do you go to bed? Do you work on the side as well?
I'm having a bit of a dilemma, whether or not I should get a regular job, go freelance or just... be. I appreciate serious answers, please.

wake up, coffee, poop, work at 9, lunch at 12, leave at 5, start freelance work, david letterman, sleep, repeat

yo joxy,
I have changed my habits a bit lately, but here is a typical day:
6-630am: Wake up
840am leave for work
1145am -1245pm: lunch
5pm: leave work
6pm: freelance if necessary
9pm: relax
11pm: sleep
- level20
work starts at 10, I wake up at 9:20. get out at 6:30 and sleep around 2am. Newstoday prevents me from working! aaaa!

I get up at 7:30, jump on the interstate with my coffee. Get to work at 8:00. Do my design thang. Get done at 5pm. Jump back on the interstate. Get home and start working on Illustrations/freelance or gallery work until 11pm.
repeat.

if I had the chance to freelance I would...feel like a prisoner...
jag trodde du hade egen firma?
- level20
Freelancing can be that way - but how can you turn them down? I can always think of new toys I want that I can buy with freelancing $$
- jox0
I had my own Spix. Sold it off recently and now I'm treated like the leftover I am - and it really doesn't require me to work with the "old firm" more than a few hours a week. (now I'm just an advisor to the firm that aquired mine)

7:30AM-4:45PM.
i live almost 60 miles from where i work, so that puts me out for about 12 hours each day.
the only freelance i do these days is to reply to a request saying, "sorry, can't do it."

so what is the trouble Jox? the paychecks stop coming in... not getting paid enough to advise?

i wake up at 6:30am and i leave for work around 7:30 (either by metro or by carpool) and i get to work at 8:30 (sometimes later because DC traffic sucks donkey nuts). Work until around 1:00 then do lunch. Leave work at 5:30 and either get my carpool ride home or i get on the Metro.
do some freelance in the evening.
i used to have a 2 hours commute EACH WAY for almost 4 years at an old job.
- jox0
Sure, I get (got) enough to get by and then some more, but sitting at home doing nothing isn't really cool in the long run.
- Spix0
well...that sound pretty good Jox.
I comute 90 miles each way every day 2 my job. It never gives me any time to work on my own projects. I work on project that goes on for months killing of any creativity i might have...there for I would rather freelance...or if I was in your situation I probably only would work on my own stuff for a while.

7:15 - i leave my house
8:05 - i get to the office
4:45 - leave work
5:15-30 - i get home and take a nap
6:00 - i get up and check my email and IMs because they're blocked at work
7:30 - dinner
8:15 - play xbox
9:00 - start freelance work
11:00 - do some pushups (people tell me i shouldn't exercise before sleep but it puts me right to sleep)
11:30 - goto sleep
- jox0
Gee, that's a lo-ong way to commute! So do you people actually have the energy to get home and work on freelance stuff after an entire day of work and commuting? I can imagine I wouldn't : /

Day-m, it's impressive you people can get so little sleep!
- zombiewoof0
It's all about the commute. A sucky commute can ruin the whole 9-5 thing. That time is totally shot, plus if the commute is stressful add another hour to decompress before you can even think straight again.
For me the distance is the primary factor in choosing a permanent position.
