Now that the election is over I'm going to take the Bushies' advice and "move out if you don't like it"
my friend in Europe is thinking of moving to Barcelona. I have one freelance client that I could probably telecommute with. But how hard would it be for a former American to get work over there? It doesn't have to be Barcelona that's just an attractive option...

it's not that easy. I did it in Finland and Germany. Tough cookie to cut. First off many Spaniards, in general, are unemployed and many of the youth live at home with their parents. Not to be prick or anything. It's much easier having something already set up for you as I did. Good Luck. BTW, this Barcelona stuff has been mentioned at least 10 times, maybe check the dB.

no man-I appreciate any info you have.
thnx

well, let's say you get over there. You only have a three month visitors visa at best in the EU. Meaning you will have to leave and enter again, unless of course you already have a predetermined work visa. etc, etc. But if you go there and then find work, maybe a company will sponsor you. But do you 1. Speak Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, German, etc? 2. Are you more qualified than indigenous people working in the same area?
Think about it. :)

I would just reinnerate the fact that most of Spain doesn't speak english. I had a hard time ordering breakfast.

true- good point. my friend in Switz says he can't get a job unless the company can prove there are no Swiss people qualified for the job.
shit, maybe I'll have to consider Vancouver and the point system

Ray it's that way in most countries for foreign imported workers. Doesn't matter where you are located. Anyway, not trying to put you down, but just think ahead. :)

More seriously, great cultural place, design scene very active, in graphism, architectur, fashion,.... one of the best capital in europe i guess because price are lower but you get paid lower.

I've been learing Spanish for 2 years so I can work in Barcelona when I'm done with Sydney.
I was offered interviews in Geneva and Antwerp a while back, and I don't speak Dutch, but I have passable French.

It's as easy for an Aemerican to work in Europe as it is for other people to work in the US. Frankly difficult.

recipricity is a bitch

You can teach English in Japan in a snap. You can possibly end up there a while too, and you can freelance from there... another idea...

(nov 3 04, 18:16)I agree with unfit, saying your Canadian always helps to be honest in most situations. Too much hatred toward your average American. You better have knock-out design skills though, there are plenty of unemployed great graphic designers and web guys in Spain. It's comptetitive from what I've heard.

I have been working in barcelona all last year, im italian, i learned spanish in less than a month, but barcelona is catalonia, not just spain.
So people there speaks catalan, and they are not so happy if they have to speak in spanish for work reason.its a great town but catalan mentality is a bit close compared to average spain.. so if you are foreigner and dont speak catalan forget to work as a freelance..
If you are well know in your field and have the right contacts( you know the right person in FAD www.fadweb.org the website now is down but check it) then maybe you have some chanche
good luck
