I love people who post advice, but really only want to illustrate thier current situation, like it's some sort fo a pose.
e.g.
'well when I was in the south of france, it was a lot easier to find work than that 6 months in Barcelona, luckily I had this super sweet contract there, that led me onto., blah, blah, blah'fucking prats

Absolutely, Catalonian is much different than New World Spanish. I mean you can pick it up, but my Espanol was lacking when I was there. They understood me, but not me them, a lot of the time.

Barcelona is a perfect place to dream of, just as San Francisco (my 2 fav. cities on the planet).
The weather is nice, though it's less windy. The beach is fully usable. The main difference is you never ask yourself "is this legal?" when you want to do something well.. let's say unusual but harmless. You want to drink wine at the beach? Go on. People grow weed like this:Don't worry about Catalan, everybody speaks Castellano (aka Spanish) there.
As an English speaker you'll pick up Spanish quickly.
There are some problems - the unemployment is high, salaries rather low and the reason people live with parents until their thirties is that housing is so damn expensive.
I wonder if you could be hired as a foreign one-person company. I know people used to work in the UK this way and they do in Poland now.
