I am a young freelance graphic and web designer who stays busy doing work for artists, bands, etc. While this work is fun, it pays very little. Does anyone have any advice on breaking into other, more lucrative areas. I want people to share how they successfully established themselves.

I thought you were talking about the movie...
To watch Breakin' right now would be a great "break" from politics.

do it for the break of your life!

You came to the wrong place for serious advice and straight answers.

ok, I know the movie. Boogaloo Shrimp (aka Turbo)... etc
But, c'mon. Answer my question...

ok, real advice.
Hit the pavement, knock on doors, get your portfolio out there. Promote Promote Promote Promote yourself. Take a close look at who would like to work for and convince them that they would benefit by having you on board. And remember, there are plenty of others that want the same posistions you're going after. Do something that will set you apart from the rest.
Bascially put a lot of energy into it. The good jobs won't come to you you've got to go after them.
Best of luck.

Thanks.
I am from Greensboro. Are you in school at UNC-Asheville?

Nope, but my wife is (receiving her second degree, this time in elementary education).

I would agree with Gruntt, try to identitfy who you would like to work with, some top agencies and get in there. The freelance game has it's benefits but unless you're really carving a niche for yourself, the creative, high-paying jobs may not come in. You do have some nice work, so just keep at it. All good things in life take time and especially in this industry.

Here is some real advice.
To really make it in the dsign game is extremely difficult. It takes a combination of talent, detrmination, skill and of course luck.
While you have a decent portfolio, you need to land some big name projects through a major agency. Either freelance or as an employee. Building a good portfolio takes years of hard work while being under paid, slaving away for people you do not respect or admire. Very few people have the determination to put up with it.
Also work on you people skills. Get a management position. That is where the money is. Being a leader who is respected and admired by other designers is the raod to management. And organizing teams of people is truly where the greatest rewards are - not being a great desigenr.
If you can stick it out for 10 years or more, most of the other competitors will drop off, get married, have kids, give up and fade away. Be positive and roll the dice, you have little to lose and everythign to gain.
I wish you the best of luck.

I saw Breakin' for the first time about 2 weeks ago and afterwards I discovered that Bugaloo Shrimp ("turbo") is on MySpace.com. So, I joined MySpace and sent him a fan email.... and he actually responded... pretty cool huh

Thanks for the input. I know I need to get some bigger jobs. But I am sort of at a loss. I just graduated from Barnard College with a degree in dance(!). I started teaching myself design programs in 2002 and began taking on jobs here and there around the same time. So, I don't have a degree from design school to recommend me, and I don't have any big clients. That makes it hard. I am getting from most of you that while Breakin' is a horrible /wonderful movie, as a freelance designer you just have to be persistent. I'm sure you're right. :)
