neonbeige, the type of work you do is really based on where the companies you're targeting are located. I've lived in Sacramento and Los Angeles. In Sacramento the largest company I did work for was the CA State Lottery. In Los Angeles I worked for some of the largest companies in the world. While I was looking for full-time work, stopping into different firms, I was offered a TON of freelance work. What helped me is how I presented my portfolio. Basically, don't show people an online portfolio, it's just not as impressive as something physical. I created a little ringed booklet with all my work, and the creative directors loved it. You NEED to be creative in this creative market. Seems logical, but so many designers are so unoriginal when trying to find work.

Visit expensive preppy nightclubs. Those places seems to attract people that loves to talk and brag about their business etc. that may give you some prospects/clients and free champagne. :-)

You have some good work in your portfolio. Don't let go with your music/artist clients that's the most creative and inspiring clients you can have. And if you don't charge what you think you're worth then at least be sure you do work that you can stand for and be proud of.
