first ave's always a good time.. drunken dive venue (purple rain place)
just don't go to the Hard Rock across the street from it.. bah!

yeah... I've seen some really top notch shows at First Ave.
Try out the 7th st. Entry which is right nextdoor (in the same building) good shows there too.
Also check and see whats playing at the 400 bar.
If yer in St. Paul be sure to check out the Turf Club... really cool place from the 40's. Dylan use to play there :) It's on University Ave. about midway between the two cities.
Have fun!

just FYI -leah-
FirstAve in minneapolis closed it's doors two days ago. they've been hinting about it for years, but ironically, on the day that you wanna see a show, it'll be dark:-(other venues around the area are trying to book the same shows that first ave had, but you might want to check out the city pages (http://citypages.com) to see if they have any idea on where the shows are gonna be....
sad sad time for mpls music
hopefully it'll reopen under new owners soon

I knew First Ave would close soon. It's too bad since I've been going there for 17 years but I knew it was coming...

wow, 1st ave closed. did 7th street entry close too? I'm lucky I've had the pleasure of playing of both the main stage and the entry.

From what I've heard it's still going to be a live music venue but with a name/ownership change...
- jpea0
i wish they'd keep the name, but i guess things change. i also had the pleasure of playing there once... good feel from the stage.
my bro-in-law was talking about it the other day and how it used to be the mpls bus depot, then it was some other bar, then first ave.. so yeah, things change.

jeez.
ok - art-attack is going on in the northrup king building.. i suspect you could google it... tons of studios with open doors and vino.
the new minnesota center for photography is right in that neighborhood and cool as can be.
you might also check out the insanity at creative. electric studios (mad taxidermists) in north east as well.
the wiesman gallery at the U of M is not to be missed.
you might also stop in at one on one bike shop - and ask gene whats cooking for the weekend... he's usually got some good dirt.
u can email me for lots more tips on places to eat and visit if you like.

well i had a wicked time in minneapolis. we did end up going to the triple rock social club to see the weakerthans (a canadian band :P)
i found it kind of scary to hear people are allowed to carry guns there, and on the pub door there was a sign saying "no guns allowed on these premises" you would NEVER see that in canada, due to guns being pretty much illegal.
p.s. minneapolis is cool
