Why there are people that hate pop ups or full screen sites so much?
example: http://www.labortv.de/html/main_…
I think in some occasions its more than justified, a site dysplaying a portfolio for eample, doesn't need to follow the rules of the classic "portal" website, making the browser window full screen, for some people is intrusive, yes, but its also a way to make the user focus on the site's experience, without distractions, this kind of sites should be viewed in a different way than cnn for example.
If its justified Im all for it.
what do you guys think?

Would you be willing to let your TV turn the sound up and your lights off when you happen across a horror movie? Wouldn't you find that kind of presumptuous? I mean, it's YOUR TV, certainly you should have the final say on how you watch it, right?
I don't think you can ever really justify hijacking a user's computer because you think they'll have a better experience viewing your site full screen.

i hate most pop ups.
it really isnt necessary to open your website in another window.is it?

welded, but that's an incorrect analogy, since browsers are BUILT to change window sizes and features. They are and always have been intentioned for such a range of display of information.

the medium is the message

"the pop up is the message"

so mediums do massage? funny pop-ups...

Can't you give people a choice? (It's interactive media isnt it?)
Some of us dont want you to take over all 1600x1200 or whatever pixels of the screen... for example we might have a few other 'amazing' presentations loading at the same time...

fate, that is a good point, but I don't think my analogy is entirely incorrect. I recall years ago seeing a story on the news about a TV which would automatically adjust the volume depending on how loud the show was, thus keeping the output throttled. I don't know how successful this feature was, but I have not seen anything like it ever again. Why, I don't know, and I realize it might be a bit of a stretch, but maybe people just didn't like having their TV make decisions for them. This is just speculation, though, as I said I have seen NOTHING of this for a long time.
I still argue that it is still highly presumptuous to launch a full screen window in an environment where you and I, as the creators, have absolutely no knowledge of the user environment. To use myself as an example, I never have just a browser open and it is never maximized. To alter the settings I prefer without my permission is not a right I extend to third parties. Now, with that said, if I know I am launching a full screen window, that is another story.

I'm not so much and advocate of automatic fullscreen shite as I am of user-initiated pop-ups. So there I agree with you, let people have more control.

How do you feel about popups, full screen, automatic, whatever, that don't allow you to resize them?
- ribit0
Do they have a close button?
What if they open across two screens or hang off the edge or behind a dock or something?

I find that full screen pop ups are quite engaging, as long as they kept in a window and allow you to use the start bar along the bottom of the screen, the 'whole' full screen thing does get on my nerves a bit and the use of smaller pop up windows to display content with links to other pop up windows are just plain annoying and have no logical concept.

Pop ups allow variety. Every site has its own flavor and its cool to mix it up. I can see how they are a bit annoying, so if you have a pop up portfolio it should be sweet.

No offense welded,
That justification doesn't make any sense at all..Its like me comparing it to a raw bowl of pasta in a restaurant, Because the cheff doesnt know if you like it al dente or not, he will just throw raw pasta on your bowl.
I think pop ups that are not requested are annoying, but in the case of this site, I think its justified, and if a user doent like it, hit the close button and go somewhere else. This site its not like news portal, so I understand if the designer didn't like to show it in the same way, and that to me is reason enough. Im not saying that this work on any kind of website.
A long time there it was one very artsy, I do not remember the address right now, but the whole website opened at least 5 different windows shaped like it was only one, if you left them all opened you can navigate the site perfectly and it was pretty cool to see how text/images matched altough they where on completely different windows one next to the other. Of course I don't pretend that all the sites are like that, but on this case creativity was reason enough for me.

And I imagine you don't go to the theaters to watch a movie cause this is intrusive to you..

I dont mind fullscreen or pop up as long as I get a nice lil warning for the popups... otherwise my popup blocker kills auto popup sites. and then I usually try to click on the page to launch the window and if nothing happens I go away

I like choice- and I choose- whenever I come across a full screen website or pop up window I instantly close it- avoiding all the possible delicious content. No matter what resides there- I am now annoyed and will not give such a site another minute of my time.

I find the full-screen pop-ups to be very annoying. And egotistical.
