Just be honest with your old boss. It's respect. Now since you did leave and started your own business, and the client came to you, it's up to you to take the job.
If you're that concerned that your old boss/friend will be that steamed over it, maybe try to work something out with him. Dog eat dog world, but friends are worth keeping too.
Damn, i thought i had a point when i started typing this..?

It would appear that I should call my old boss and work this out.
I found out he's still doing a number of projects for them... but just not the multimedia / new media stuff - as he's only capable of handling print.

and you probably made him feel really good about his connection with you. You were open and honest. He'll value that immensely.

what up bizzy,
i would send the client back to your former boss and see if you can get a large cute of the money. Talk it over with him. Definitely be bad juju to work around him. Sounds like the client is trying to save a buck.
All is well?

TF... while I was at the studio... the boss always had his hand in on the design - this client has been 'his' for over 10 years.
My feeling is that he would want to force continuity (maintaining his style so-to-speak)... and that's why he would probably be a bit upset for not be included.
whiteSneaks.... doing a-okay, dude... biz is insane... sooo much work! How's life at Esser? When are we going to lunch?... and damn if don't miss the Manley-isms. :)
cheers everyone.. thanks for the thoughts - lots to think about.
