Isn't a bass player, the result of what you get when you cross a drummer with a musician?

sorry to go OT on this, but whose the skouser looking dude in the red t-shirt with the black (who'd have guessed) leather jacket, in the middle of this pic that was posted earlier in the thread?

Steve Vai on Elephant Gun when he was with David Lee Roth.

Stariani, Malmsteen, Van Halen and co are technical masters but they don't seem to cut it really.
I prefer some soul and heart: Hendrix, Young, Drake.

sorry to be a bit of a music nerd but.....
guitars were originally used for playing whole pieces of music (like lute suites etc) which involed bass, chordal and melody parts played together, ie 3in1 to make the piece.
It was much later on in the twentieth century that guitar players tried to emulate instruments like saxaphones which could only play one note at a time. Single note soloing was born.So really saying what's the best guitar solo is kinda pointless. The real question should be what's the best instrumental solo?
- Spilt-Milk0
Come on - we know what we're all talking about here.

all I'm saying is the guitar is one instrument. It produces the same 12 notes as other instruments, so is the fact that it's played on a guitar relevant. You could play the bohemian rhapsody solo on a keyboard, it would still be the same musically, just different tonally.
Anyway I don't know why I'm making this point, I love Van Halen and have learnt pretty much every solo but still.
check my site for proof!

frank zappa's peaches in regalia has wicked solos thoughout the song on different instruments
oh the solo in soul to squeeze by the chillies is a fav!

Baskervilee you are absolutley right about those 12 notes.
But if you think that the bohemian rhapsody solo on saxaphone is the same as a guitar verion you need to get your ears checked.

i've always been a huge slash fan [part of the reason i became a guitar player 12-13 years ago] - always enjoyed this......
[this is a very sloppy version of the solo that he played at most shows of the illusion tour]
http://www.bulletfactory.com/nt/… (GNR)- Godfather Theme.mp3Here's a long solo from the same timeframe
http://www.bulletfactory.com/nt/…I'm surprised no one mentioned cliff Burton's bass solo [was it on the album kill 'em all - i'm not really a metallica fan]
Gary Hoey is pretty cheese-ball, but the peanuts theme he does is funny.....

David Gilmore - Wish You Were Here
most under rated guitarist ever

and please never mention these names around serious guitar players:
George Lynch
Carlos Cavazo

under-rated only because rock music, for the most part, has gotten basic as of late.
"chugga chugga chugga chug chug chug"
this is where there are so many bands out
gilmore is still a monster in the guitar world .
Steve Vai, while techincal, is multi faceted. He can play a number of styles...puts on a great show and is a good songwriter. His mentor, Zappa, really influenced him in the sense of writing music for music's sake. Not for double platinum sales or grammy's.

I'd take someone the likes Preston Reed or Michael Hedges over Tom Morello any day
