thanks for keepin me on the up and up. but i like to make fun of my ignorance of pop culture, thereby justifying watching rap videos as some sort of social analysis of what all the kids are up to these days, i.e. watching half nekkid chics in hottubs grinding all over some dude. yay! rap videos! so many of them are made in my town, i gotta get myself in one of those

ok, i dunno, im 23, i never try to imply that I know fuck-all
maybe i missed the thread where derek said he knew everything
- nick0
you must have missed the 'derek' thread (the one with 800+ posts)
- exador10
hey nick!
thanks man...nice to be missed!i konw what you mean ....
seems i remember when i was dereks age, i wasn't quite so full on self promotion and hyping myself all the time..
then again,...
who knows?
maybe the lil dude is on to something...
if he's that young, and has all the sponsorships he says he has, and all the work/clients etc.
hell...
not a bad start...i've met guys that were all hot air before..born salesmen, ya know?..
totally full of shit, but with that sincere smile that makes you want to kick them..
the ones that always seem to be rolling in cash, driving nice cars and living in nice condos etc...it's sort of like a confidence game that way...
i think what derek has, is that he has that same confidence...
and he's able to convince others around him that he's all that...beyond that, i think he truly does seem to enjoy design and the design world...
he'll tone it down eventually i'm sure...
atleast around here anyhow..
for some folks, it takes awhile to fit in...
hell, the first thread i remember taking part in, i think i told transfatty he was being an idiot or something like that...yikes..
that was back when he was just Patrick obrien 'round here..but still.....
glad he never held it against me
hahacheers

the thing is, he's not onto something.
everybody i know who's met/read/come across derek has thought he was a joke.
when you're young, you can be proud of the talent you do have, and your potential, but if you want to grow and live up to that potential, you must learn humility.
i've been lucky enough to learn it from my closest friends. i know so many youngsters who are absolutely kicking ass and who are so god damn humble it boggles my mind. and the fact that they are so god damn cool about it will be the reason they succeed.. and continue to grow.
fair enough - derek has many sponsorships, but i don't see any clients, none. derek could be 10x further if he wasn't so full of himself.. i truly believe that.
anyways, i just hope this gets through to him, i really do.
(but something tells me it wont)cheers,

"i know so many youngsters who are absolutely kicking ass and who are so god damn humble it boggles my mind. and the fact that they are so god damn cool about it will be the reason they succeed.. and continue to grow."
no doubt, an admirable quality

that ym shit is gonna haunt, and his posse is perpetuating it.
no mercy, sweep the leg pvn.
- zedvox0
i think when one starts looking for a job sooner or later one learns humility.
damn i need a job.
anyways i agree with kezza , well said....
and the way sean getti and sarab were talking today....thats just immature fluff that needs to be toned down.
- mowax0
i totally agree w/you, nick.
but man, we all should be mad with these people who do some shit like this-> http://www.1-sun-web-site-promot… instead of pissing the kid like Derek..
- pascii0
weren't we not all like derek? lots of time on our hands to create our own ego/face? - then we went off to the cruel world with meetings, advertisers, insane clients and quick'n'dirty philosophy? and some years later we found back to ourselfs with a well educated and built idea of what we wanna do?
- Rand0
the part I like about derek is that seems like an excitable pup, wagging his tail and eager to join in the fun of design, even excited by the font on the wing of his airplane . the part I don't like so much is the derek-seangetti canadian/urban self promotional bullshit. What is being sponsored and promoted-- the beingness of derek?
- -leah-0
maybe the question is:
who IS derek?
does anyone know?
- derek30
hmm....
- -sputnik-0
i don't mean to be an ass, slag, but did you mean books by nietzche??
- mrdobolina0
hey kid, what exactly are you sponsored for?
- derek30
Nick,
First of all, I am older than you... why all this talk about humility and young designers, when you yourself are younger than I....
You have NO idea what I am doing right now, and what YM is doing to shift my career, marketing potential, and otherwise push myself as a brand. It shocks me that you would assume that I am sitting around on my ass, while my website is generating that amount of traffic.
I do not understand why you hate on me so bad.
As far as clients go, Stylehard was one of our first “Urban sites” which got linked off k10k 2 days after we launched it... last I heard, you were down in San Francisco in some office tower working for another company.
I totally and utterly respect that, and I too may work for another company one day, but for now, I run my own shit, and sail my own boat. This is the way I’ve done it for a while, and this is the way I will continue to do it.
I rep myself sooo hard, so that I am able to do fun stuff and be creative. I don’t know where I would be right now without MediaTemple. I am transferring over 20 GB per month off my server, which would cost me way more than I could spend on hosting, due to the number of hits specifically from YM, and being linked at various sites around the net.
I am sorry that all of your friends think I am a joke, but I don’t see myself as one. I am simply laying the groundwork for a huge operation which has MEat the middle as a marketable brand.
I haven’t been designing as much as I would like, due to the immense work it takes to handle with booking, YM, TV appearances, etc.
All press is good press, and I am simply taking advantage of the situation. My photography is the main focus on my site right now, and is being seen by millions of people, as it was intended, seeing as this is a “global village” (McLuhan)
I get countless emails from young girls and boys that tell me how inspired they are to keep doing what they are doing, or to take up photography or design. I think this is the most powerful part of the whole thing.
I actually have met Cina and Young, and chilled with them after flashinthecan2003. They are very humble people. One of my idols is Joshua Davis, who is much different than Cina and Young, and I find that his personality is more close to mine. This allowed me to have him speak at my highschool during flashinthecan.
I do have a formal education in design, not at a post secondary institution, but at my high school where we were taught the likes of Mau amongst others.
Nick, you are younger than me, and if my memory serves me correctly did not finish a formal training in post secondary design.
Design is a life long learning process and one will never know everything there is to know, because it is being re-invented at the speed of light.
I think that you have to get over whatever is causing you to have a beef or problem with me, from back in the Lounge days.
I understand that if you don’t like me then you are entitled to your own opinion.
Anyway, I just thought I had to say something, because frankly, I didn’t say anything yesterday in that Derek top 3 post. I read it after I got back from a photoshoot, and was saddened to see people talking behind my back, so to speak, and then you bashing me whenever you had the chance, like some kind of kindergarten bully.
I am sorry if my attitude or lifestyle offend you Nick, and I am sorry that you cant seem to want to talk to me, and continue to block me on MSN. I think you are a great guy, and I think we could do some really cool stuff together...

yeah yeah, but what exactly are you sponsored for?
