I see your point.
But from an artistic standpoint there is a greater aura with film as opposed to digital.
With film there is always that one original negative, which is pure and will always have greater meaning imo.
...digital files are like bastard children.

I read these threads with some interest, and quite frankly I think some of you are up your own arse...
Saying 35mm is better than digital is like saying a canvas is better than an A2 printout.
I think in we are lucky that we have both and as designers you should choose the appropriate tools for the job.
For example most newspaper photographers carry a high end digital because that is just so much quicker to get to print.
Also I would suggest that if your photograph has a digital output, then frankly it doesnt make much difference what you use, once it is on a screen its all pixels anyhow.
The are benefits with both, and at the end of the day you use what is relevant.

I think if you want to experiment, have fun, take photos for low res output (ie: web/video) or even family pictures, small projects ...digital is the future and the way to go! I'd get a digital SLR vs the point and shoot camera since I'm in the creative market.
The pros say 35mm holds better quality. In terms of color and sharpness.
So what is 35mm good for these days since it can provide a better quality in terms or sharpness and color? I'd say all full color prints from billboards, posters and magazines.
As for me, I'm good with digital for what I want to do. (web, video, fun, experiment, friends and family shots) I'm not going to be a pro photographer so I won't need the extra 35mm quality. I bet I can get away with using a digital camera in the print market where my clients aren't as quality hungry.

film is for those who can afford it.

the lens is what makes it all!!!

film is for die-hards who want it's analog-chemical eccentricities. Remember all those etchers and woodcut makers were bitching when film came along...
- ribit0
I should say die-hards/artists ;)
- quamb0
so we have to be die-hards/artists to use film these days eh?
perhaps in 5 years film will fall the way of artists and 2nd world countries. but dang, i love film. yum yum, anytime.

awell at the moment just being poor (not being able to afford the really high-end digital stuff) can also make film a better option... but not for much longer.

that's pretty cool. i wonder went a model will come out that precedes the 1Ds?
