hi,
i'm basically a print designer who has been entagled with a few friends who want to start up a multi-level media firm consisting of advertising, design and audio production.
On one hand, i feel that by delving into those two other media would levege a heavy burden and possibly compromise on what i intended to do. At the moment, we're going to spilt it this way. The advertising and design arm would be a division under the audio recording co. My mate who is the advertising person is certain that advertising would bring in more clients and money for design and audio recording.
Am i making a mistake by joining them? My ambition was to do album artwork and my very own DIY magazine..
Pls advise if anyone has any...

It's never a bad thing to work in other areas, the real crux of the question is whether your mates can make the company work or not. Are they trustworthy? have they got the skills to pay the bills? if so then do it (whilst retaining some independence/back up clients in case you need to bail out quick) if not go with your instincts and give it a miss...

if you are confused, don't do it.

i would absolutely agree with spaniard. The more important question is if your pertners are worth partnering with. Teaming up with good people can take you very far. And diversifying yourself can take you even further. If all is right, it sounds like a damned good combination.
Pigeon holing yourself is probably one of the worst things you can do.

Thanks guys.
The thing is the advertising partner is really good in churning out creative ideas but he has a discipline problem that sees us being late or unprepared for pitches or meetings with clients..
On the other hand, the guy who manages the audio recording bit is disciplined, but knows nuts about business.
i'm confused and fustrated not because the partnership is not gonna take my work far, but instead i've to dwell so often into the business side of the work that leaves me so drained from actually designing..
what i'm saying is, should i market myself as a designer, or as an entity that has multi-displinary causes?
