It's never a bad thing to work in other areas, the real crux of the question is whether your mates can make the company work or not. Are they trustworthy? have they got the skills to pay the bills? if so then do it (whilst retaining some independence/back up clients in case you need to bail out quick) if not go with your instincts and give it a miss...
