thankyou mimio - that was exactly what i was looking for

this is probably the lower end of what you're looking for, but i had a 98 jeep cherokee for a number of years and it was by far the best, most reliable, least cost of ownership vehicle i've ever owned. it could easily handle off road, winter, board rack on top, dog in the back, and didn't get too bad of gas mileage.
saying that, i kinda like my current car: 2004 nissan SE-R spec v. good gas mileage and 175hp in that little thing makes it move

cheers jpea - am considering a jeep liberty...but have heard bad things about its mechanics. above all I am looking for good mpg and low running costs...but at teh same time it needs to be an SUV size and have crash protection up the wazoo!

yeah, the grand cherokee's were/are horrible for reliability (2nd hand experience), and the liberty isn't too far ahead of that i've heard.. the regular cherokee's though were reliable as anything (same essential car from 1984-2002, only with improvements). no crash protection up the wazoo though:-(
only driver and pass. airbags
