Aw man what I wouldn't give to have lunch with Keira Knightley today. Tell her all my woes, then she'll console me...ahhhh...
Thanks leah, yer a doll.
Thanks to the rest of you guys. I'll definitely get my boss to write me a letter of recommendation. It'll be easy, she'll give me an awesome one because she's in the same boat as I am. Except she just bought a brand new BMW.... ouch!

Yeah, I'm really hoping that this will kick my ass in gear. I see the work you guys do and I have nothing comparable. I don't even have a website. I have all the help I could need in setting one up, but I just haven't done it. I don't know what I've been doing in the meantime.
So my portfolio will have to grow (I'm hanging on to my sketchbook like a life preserver right now) I'll need to do a site too.
I'm pushing myself into a little more DJ'ing too. I'm going to try and hit a local bar that has an open turntable night. I'm building my set right now and it would consist of tracks from the likes of Portishead, Squarepusher, Massive Attack, Bjork, Modest Mouse, Mars Volta and the Postal Service. Along with various other drum n' bass tracks. Should be good if I practice up and gather the tracks together.

gilt how did your wife take it? hopefully she is being supportive?
i am kind of in the same boat, not sure if i am going to be fired soon either, but i am hoping i will be.
- Gilt0010
she took it alright. I mean, it's not like I got fired, I'm really being laid off. So I had no control. Which she thankfully understood. I'm glad this didn't happen a year ago, I was in a much worse mental state.
Hope all goes well for you too leah!

Gilt, you'll probably find more inspiration in music and DJ'ing. It's another great outlet for creative minds, and lord knows having someone come up to you after a set and give you props for what you played, man that's a million times better then some client bullshitting you about how much they "appreciate" your efforts.
That will help other aspects of your career, and loosing the drudgery of a 9-5 job can help your mindstate in terms of creativity tremendously.
Take the time and find your niche, we all have one out there, it's just a matter of time and using it wisely.
Best of luck!

Thanks mike. I've only gotten a little taste of the joys of Dj'ing and having it mean something to someone.
I spun at my first party not too long ago and I made a new friend with a guy who has a residency in Vegas and he told me my mixes were dead on. I couldn't believe it because I hadn't spun on 1200's before, just belt-drives.
Not too many people were into my sound, but I did get a couple of completements from some friends. I'm looking forward to more.
I'm gonna go check out the bar on Monday to see what the crowds like and see what other guys are spinning.

The most important thing is that it means something to you. I've been djing in my livingroom for like 4 -5 years as I was too afraid that my taste in music wasn't worth taking out to the masses and not to mention that I'm not very good! But I started doing small gigs here and there and people appreciated what I was playing and that I wasn't comprimising integrity by just playing the same shit people hear everywhere. And in the process I've gotten better and more comfortable over the years.
I would never make a career out of it, but when things start going well, it's an amazing feeling, making people dance and react positively...
That being said I cleared the bar the other night and it felt like shit, but who cares, you can't please everyone all the time.
I like the type of music you mentioned earlier, too bad you weren't in Toronto, we could have a crew of dj/designer geeks!
- -leah-0
mmm dj designer geeks
- Gilt0010
oh i'm totally a dj designer and way geek. I think i'm more dj than geek though. Maybe I should be a geeky dj designer.
I be pullin' all the honeys! Not really...
Yeah, I just started to listening to different things and realized that I wanted to get into spinning just crazy all over the place dj sets. I could easily make it through a night in a bar in downtown Seattle with a playlist like that. I heard this postal service song this morning and immediately realized I had a few drum and bass tracks that I could match it will. My Kool Keith into Boy George mix is my current fave. Who knew!!

Gilt, have you heard much of Z-Trips stuff, his mixes rather than his production. It's very much along those lines...I can shoot you some of that ish on Monday if you wish.
- Gilt0010
The name sounds really familiar, I can't think of where I heard it before.
I'm not sure where I'll be on Monday (since I won't be sittin' at this computer) so I'll shoot you an e-mail.
Thanks mike!
- mike_g0
Yeah, there was a thread the other week about that stuff and Z-Trip came up, but he mixes everything in his sets. Classic rock, retro 80's, drum 'n bass, hip hop, you'll dig it. So definitely let me know where you're at and we'll keep our secret file sharing going!!
