I agree grayhood, the mesh tool is by far the hardest tool to conquer in illustrator, at least for me. I have mad respect for everyone that can understand the logic enough to make it work.

That's lovely, Epictive! I'd say to do a solid black shape for the rest of the hair, with a few "ghosting" highlights.
