I've gotta design a logo for a hypnosis clinic. i don't want to go the generic route w/ and eye, or swingin pendulum, or that spinning thing that makes me wanna puke, anyone have any ideas??? I was thinkin just a simple san serif font... hmmm

You might want to look up the ancient greek god of sleep called Morpheas.
Maybe there could be something there that might trigger your imagination.

use a serif font but do a gaussian blur over it.

add some 3d effect after the gaussian blur. some of the best design agencies make it. and they rule

you could also make use of negative spacing so that the words are not immediately apparent.

well it wouldn't have to jump right out and look exactly like an eye or a pendulum either... i would think you could work a logo to be one of those things where the user looks at it, and after a few moments of studying it realizes "hey! i see, that's supposed to be a pendulum! crazy!"
if you make a plain logo from nothing but a serif font, your client's logo would be more likely to be forgotten by their potential customers?
