well it wouldn't have to jump right out and look exactly like an eye or a pendulum either... i would think you could work a logo to be one of those things where the user looks at it, and after a few moments of studying it realizes "hey! i see, that's supposed to be a pendulum! crazy!"
if you make a plain logo from nothing but a serif font, your client's logo would be more likely to be forgotten by their potential customers?
anyway my two cents.....
