So, I am going to try and learn SQL server 2000.
The problem is that i have no experience with relational dBs what-so-ever.
Can you recommend a book that will hold my little hand and assume correctly that i am an idiot?TR1

Do you want to learn SQL the language or the DBMS?
If you don't know SQL, I recommend getting a really basic SQL book and going from there.
Install SQL Server, and start playing with it. I think M$ has an evaluation somewhere (or just scheme a copy off of your IT dept).
The SQL Server 2000 is pretty intelligent, so it almost takes care of itself once set up properly. Concentrate on design/development. I'm a DBA, and I spent most of my time on that. Besides dealing with the occasional crisis, administration duties usually aren't enough to take up all of your time.
That's how I learned.

Learning "MS SQL Server", and learning "SQL" are two totally different things. Do you want to learn SQL for program (is, websites, data drive app) or do you want to manage a server?
if you want to learn SQL for web development, download MySQL (FREE) get yourself "Managing & Using MySQL, 2nd Edition" from Oreilly
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/m…
This basically taught me SQL as well as how to Run and Manage a MySQL Server

I got the O'Reilly pocke reference..and studied it..not really an instructional tool..but a function reference
however..I find it always handy!
