seriously, we need to take a stand against these places, they are paying such low rates and taking half of what the client is paying, it's driving the value of our expertise down to menial labor. i saw a request for someone earlier today come through my mailbox, in los angeles, a designer with photoshop, dreamweaver, asp and php needed. FOR $25 AN HOUR!!!! this is just sad and wrong. i think we should take a stand and not do anything for under a certain rate and make it so these companies can't place qualified people at rates lower than they deserve..... thoughts?

"...a designer with photoshop, dreamweaver, asp and php needed..."

All it takes to know those particular skills is a trip down to the local bookshop. Hence the $25 p/h price tag. It's the macjob for the 21st century.

Plus, for all we know the job might entail making 468x60 three frame banners every day...

Be careful what you wish for.

Although there are a lot of dodgy, unprofessional agencies out there, keep in mind that because they make money from hiring you, it's in their interest to get you a position at the highest rate they can. Not to mention that a lot of these places are contracted out with certain companies, giving them a monopoly on positions that would never be advertised elsewhere.

Applying for a job by yourself leaves you on your own.

I've hired agencies to find staff and it's no fun on the other side of the coin. Instead of listening to your needs, they simply barrage you with unqualified applicants as fast as they get them in because they are desperate for the commission. grrr.. :-(

Get in with one and find out who their list of clients are and solicit work for them at a price 90% of what they would pay the agency. Ask some firends who have gone through the agencies where they worked, google for the names of the agencies in your area and you should hit a couple reumes with names of companies on there. I did the aganc when i first started out because I didn't kow an better. They were taking $145/hr and paying me $23. Then I got an agency job for a while, but now I just hit up all the clients I remember them trying to send me to and talked about with me when I was there. I'm geting $75-$130/hr now, and I can work wherever I want. And it was after the requisite 6 month "waiting period" so there's nothing they can do. Yay me.
