hands down the best thread, I agree.
Nic, I guess it's all about the approach with clients. Sometimes you need to give them an impression that they are coming up with ideas, but you still fill them with the right stuff. That's only if you wanna do it your way and enjoy the job.
Here's one of my sites that will not go into my portfolio. I did the whole packaging for the product, their collaterals (they all look pretty nice) but the budget for the site was like a $1k and they had their own ideas. Our relationship is not that good because they delayed each payment for months, so I was like in the end "WTF, you wanna fucking site, I'll give you a fucking site" :)
Plain horrible:

the guy actually told me scan a bunch of magazine ads and paste his face into them.
-for his "modeling portfolio".
he also had me put armani logos on his crappy pics and try to pass them off like he was some kind of supermodel or something.

I call these sites my "bastard children".
They are out ther but no one knows they exist. After fighting the clients I just gave up and got paid.
Three weeks ago walked out on a 3K project after clashing with the so called "project manager" on some basic web design issues. Issues I knew woudl be problems for months to come... so a bailed.
Well, at least I got to keep the $800 they paid as a down payment.

well, on my brief look at your first link, I'd say –
well, fair enough, they insisted on the logos at the bottom and their size but I'm sure you could have persuaded them about the speed at which they zip across the screen – just looks like bad, unfocussed design to me, no matter what the client restrictions.
