oh shit... was it awarded to ur grandfather? Woops, i didn't realise. Sorry, didn't mean to diminish his achievements like that.
Just the whole award looks really odd. I always thought u get awarded for an achievement. A seperate award just for getting wounded seems odd. Guess its a moral building excercise.

yeah, but I know what you mean. It's all good. It is silly if you just get a scrap and get some award. It was used for morale more than anything I think.

my grandfather died on that beach. from what im told, he drove an amunition boat into a mine.

Yeah, talking to the war generation (like my grandfather) they always seem embarassed about getting wounded, not proud. Like the grenade shrapnel he took to his hands, he feels like he was stupid and wreckless and didn't take proper precautions.
Anyway, it's all good :)

a majority of purple heart recipients won't wear them or acknowledge they have them. they do'nt think it's fair. they got wounded in action and get sent home while their buddy next to them was killed and gets nothing. i did a site a while back for the purple heart foundation and at least that's what the guy told me.

yeah it depends on how you see it I guess. I'm just posting what I find like a story. The pix I scan will be better than that.

My great uncle stormed the beach at Omaha.
He was 17 years old kid in Dorcester (Mass) the year before, when he lied about his age to join the army.
At Omaha he was shot - through the mouth and behind the ear.
He recovered, met my aunt (who was a nurse at a VA hostpital), and went on to work @ MIT and Lincoln Labs. He's still alive today, and his stories never get old...
His worst memory: hiding below the cliffs, with his other wounded friends, watching the tide come in, turn red, and wash away so many...
