Christ, I can't even really imagine giving-in to xhtml and css for another couple of years!
Long live the bodge!

(Dec 8 04, 03:23)Hmmm. Sooner the better on that one. I've started. And it's to know you've made an effort.

I do make an effort. I just tend to give in to a table instead of spending hours working out an exact, css representation. Which will break between browsers anyway!
Anyway, good ol' Alistapart has a PNG bodge for IE 5.5+ :

So what are we concluding here?
1) Gifs are old-hat and we should be using *pings now?
2) *Pings are still not standard enuff. Keep crustin' away with those Gifs?

okay
this is a png and gif in the same doc. change bgcolor of the html doc with the + and - signs.
in all my mac browsers it works okay
but on pc XP IE6/6.1 it doesn't work well. does IE support png's or do i have to add some javascript to hack this??

yea it's too bad that we can't use pngs yet. i mean they've been around for quite a while now. how many times haven't u wished that you could use the png alpha channels? aargh.

I wish it every time I make a website using graphics with anti-aliased edges...
so basically EVERY DAY.

I think what you guys are completely missing here is the fact that you need to know your different compressions. There is a time to use .jpg's, .gif's, and .png's to get the best compression. The png format does not always compress better than the .gif. You just need to know your color scenerios to approach the best compression format. Gif will always compress better than the PNG if there are predominant, solid colors present on an image. Try it yourself and experiment to get the best results.

yup, IE doesnt fully support png transparency.
- stewart0
thanks toastie.
and yarsrevenge:
sometimes the possibilities of a png are more important than the compression.

I agree with Stewart, I once tried out PNG a year or two ago, and ended up not using it because it really didn't compress as well as GIF or JPEG on the variety of images I have tried. But these days, the extra size doesn't matter as much as what is possible with the PNG format.
Too bad Microsoft ONCE AGAIN ruins this for the web developers. Pretty much kills the possibilities of using PNG's aliasing abilities for the next half decade or so.

i use pngs in flash all of the time.
png-24, that is.if yr dealing with stuff that doesn't need an alpha channel, yeah, i probably just use a gif

Compression rates differ depending on the app. Fireworks does a crappy job at times. Of course jpegs are smaller, they're not lossless.
Anyways, this isn't interesting as long as there's no IE support. *sigh*

life is decompressed

Here's the deal - IE does actually support PNG transparency, but you need to do some fancy PHP/code swapping stuff first.
Look at this:
http://www.koivi.com/ie-png-tran…Cleverly, with just one little include file and some output buffering, you've got proper transparency in IE (although it makes your css and code look a little ugly).

PNG is nice to work in with Flash. Very good results when I do so.
