I think what you guys are completely missing here is the fact that you need to know your different compressions. There is a time to use .jpg's, .gif's, and .png's to get the best compression. The png format does not always compress better than the .gif. You just need to know your color scenerios to approach the best compression format. Gif will always compress better than the PNG if there are predominant, solid colors present on an image. Try it yourself and experiment to get the best results.
