I will admit that, having been here 3 months now...I understand why in some places it is a neccessity to have a car. Most US cities have appauling public transport infrastrustures, and the nearest grocery shop is sometimes a 15-20 min drive away. Also people living in teh burbs need a car just to get out of the burbs and back - lol.
In London, for example - even the burbs are serviced by (admittedly an overpriced old and stanky) an efficient public transport service...so the need for a car is diminished...

True, but our country is FARKING HUGEEEE... we cant walk or take bus,train everywhere like your little england.
So when prices rise... for you that means not as much.. but when they rise here and we travel hundreds of miles a week.. it means our pocket books get hit hard.!

I arrived in Australia a few months ago where you NEED a car (I originally come from France where distances are rather small and public transport not too bad).
However, if ppl start to complain and put some pressure on public authorities to improve public transport, it's better than being resignated to buy a car.
Also, one should encourage car pooling: it's a shame to see all those empty cars riding on the highway every morning while you can fit 3 passengers in them ...

i live in detroit and the public transportation sucks my asshole ten times a day. and the people in detroit seem to not give a fuck, because nothing is done about the numerous problems with detroit.
i have to hitch a ride with someone if i want to go ANYWHERE there. it's ridiculous, cant go anywhere without a car. and yeah, it is ignorance to have this huge transportation system [automobiles] and have every car on the freeway filled with one person.
my anger has exploded over this topic.

dude - thats cos you live in the epicentre of the america car manufacturing body!! Of course there's no public transport - the big car and oil companies that run this country want you to buy their cars, and buy their gas!

there is a poorly sufficient bus, and a train that goes in a tiny circle that no one rides.
detroit is a city of work, no one lives there, except me, so all the people you see are the ones you see coming to work in the morning, and then leaving at five.

i just picked up an old honda 400 cc motorbike for 700 bucks, insured it for a hundred bucks, slapped on some different handlebars filled it up for 7 bucks and hit the road. go ahead opec raise gas to whatever you want.
