I'm reposting these. I think everyone who considers buying an SUV should read this material.

www.idontcareaboutair....Coming from a family of 6, I understand the need for Minivans and SUV's, but for comuting puposes, people should have a second car and I think the government should reward these people for doing so. If people had the SUV for the weekends up to the cottage - towing bikes, kids, etc etc, and then had thier little smart/honda civic for the daily commute, they'd save a whack on petrol costs, repair costs and they'd be doing the environment a huge favour.
Because really - people who can afford a brand new SUV are typically able to buy a pissy little comuter.
Good to see like minded thinking people here.

also from jevad's previous link:
How often do hybrid batteries need replacing? Is replacement expensive and disposal an environmental problem?
The hybrid battery packs are designed to last for the lifetime of the vehicle, somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 miles. The warranty covers the batteries for between eight and ten years, depending on the car maker. Some detractors doubt that the batteries will truly last that long, so only time will tell.
Hybrids use NiMH batteries, not the environmentally problematic rechargeable nickel cadmium. "Nickel metal hydride batteries are benign. They can be fully recycled," says Ron Cogan, editor of the Green Car Journal. Toyota and Honda say that they will recycle dead batteries and that disposal will pose no toxic hazards.

the vast majority of people don't need SUVs, that's true. i spend half my life off-road, but i imagine i am an exception. i also spend lots of time making my way up high-grade gravel driveways.
ever try that in a front or rear-wheel drive car, jevad? in the snow? good times ;)

hysterical that ppl buy expeditions and escalades, and then bitch about the price of petrol.

I also thought this was interresting about the misconception of having more space in an SUV...
Jeep Cheroke VS Subaru Outback - both 4 wheel drive...
jeep: 66cu ft.
outback: 81cu ft.

unless you're some lame soccer mom or jerk who wants a big car, what you want most from an off-highway vehicle is clearance. you want a center locking diff. you want a disconnected rear sway bar. you want 4-low. you want skids and sliders.
the rest is some pseudo 4 wheel drive BS. and i have yet to see an escalade, excursion or the like on a real trail. they're all in it for the BLING.

actually PU,
SUVs (were) maybe still are a write off loop hole tax credit purchase where if you spend $35gerrr on an SUV you get $35gerrr in tax credits. so if you had enuff income (this was the law last year in the US anyway ) your fokin single occupancy armored personnel carrier piece of shit (Grand Cherokee - HA!)was free.

lateness of reply again..
But re: hydrogen refining
Thats bollox that hydrogen refinerys would simply replace oil refineries.. Pure hydrogen gas can by easily created from splitting water molecules.. The only drawback is that vast amounts of electricity are needed.. Though the developments of renewable and clean energy sources are now making this possibly without the need for fossil fuels..
The oil companies have people well duped..

dude, nobody should applaud ford, ford sucks. Any american car sucks, for real.
AUDI, BMW, PORSCHE, NISSAN
thats what its all about.
its about performance, not trying to sell as many cars as possible, like ford builds, disposable pieces of shit. they suck SOOOOO bad. General motors sucks. We're 10 years behind in the auto industry.

(alternet article) Thats George Bush and his corporate for you - a hydrogen economy based on clean energy sources is what I was talking about..
- Gorbie0
but that's the problem with the whole idea.
'you know who' will be the first ones to get their oily paws on the technology, and still come away 'clean'

SUV...if you have a need for them they fuckin rock.
Like Jevad...I too live in the mountains and a burly 4WD is a must have...not only for safety but leisure as well.
There are soo many logging roads here that lead to remote lakes, ghost towns, mountain peaks...you'd be missing out without an SUV or truck.
On that note...anyone interested in buying my 1999 Landrover Discovery Series I? Looking to buy something a bit newer...she's going for a song...20k CDN takes it!

hey 2cent...i've got a 2001. u have any mods on there that you'd care to sell off before selling the truck? i.e. an adventure rack or skid plates?
;)
