From a pure design trendyness point of view i guess that UK's always been very advanced compared to the rest ...
I used to live in France where design was regarded as useless for many years (with the exception of Philip Starck). Creative ppl were more into "traditional" arts or street art.
Now some ppl try to close the gap ... 45deg arrows & deerheads :(
PPl who were down in the streets graffiting walls and trains are now on the web and i must say they are gooood (123Klan, Miss Van, ...).

all the same googledy-hey. Europe is run by fashion intellectuals who can bring up a sucessful magazine about alarm clocks, the most incredible panties, and boring corporate trends (except a few german and NCC), and US, where not deep in pornography and guns, manages a few darn innocent graphics. grossly speaking of course. still, lots of work to do, boys.

i personally love european design. specifically their type treatments. also it seems european design takes more risks idea wise.
us design is more about getting the brand out there.
im from chicago and the design here is too conservative.

advertising = mostly conservative design these days.

my 2 cents. i think the differences are getting smaller due to that the world is getting smaller. it's easier to see other works and be inspired / influenced by it. that's from a design / art point of view. on the other side advertising has a lot to do with the local culture. it's norms, values, rules, acceptances etc. that's why english and dutch advertising are generally more "advanced" as e.g. german advertising. all based on culture. so as long as these differences remain differences in advertising will remain.
