nice one jox..
i've been giving the same damn advice for a while too..
it's funny..
when youre 19 or 20, it seems damn near impossible, but the older ya get..the simpler it becomes..
i suppose the hardest part is getting past ageism..
the main worry for a younger designer is that because they are young they may not get taken as seriously as someone in their late 20's or early 30s..the truth of the matter is that, it all depends on the individual..
i've met some younger designers that i'd trust with HUGE projects, because they come to the table with skills and confidence..
on the other hand, i've met some that were cocky and arrogant, and had nothing to back it up....
it all depends on the person..nice one jox...
it's stuff like this that makes me proud to be on NT..
:)cheers

sneaky bastard!
I am on my way to being a sell-out!
- jox0
So true ex, sounds like something I would say. :)
Might also add for the record that I wasn't much older myself when I practised these things, 22-ish or so. But I dressed as if I was older ..ha!

hahah..
BINGO..
me too man....another trick i learned was to read all the trade magazines i could....here in Canada, that mainly means 'marketing magazine' a weekly trade mag for advertising and design..
if you're having a meeting with an agency, or whatever, it definitely looks good if you know whats going on ....which creative director switched to a new agency...which agency just lost a huge account, etc..
design and advertising is rife with name dropping, and is a pretty incestuous community at it's best..
so if you're new....you should do your damndest to get up to speed on whats what and who's who...oh..one other wicked sneaky useful trick..
don't shop around your useless college work.
everyone knows its from college, and no one really cares about it...except your parents that helped pay for it..
it's a harsh truth...but truth it is..
instead, try to pick up pro-bono work...
but the sneaky trick my old art director taught me (it's what he did)
work up mock ads for stuff....
not Coke, or nike...everyone will know thats a lie..
but second or third tier products..the kind you usually don't see ads for...
work them up professionaly...
get high glossy comps of them.
when you present them..
DON'T tell them i'ts mock..
dont' say anything about it other than the creative direction you took, and the skills you used to make it..what usually happens is the guy looking at it will say
' oh..didn't this run in 'fill in the blank' magazine or newspaper..
just say...yah..i think so...i wasn't involved in the media buy...works like a charm...
it' might be decietful...but damn..
so is every ad you'll ever design..
the whole point is to sell it...
so sell yourself with the same gusto..:)

Tell it.. . exador...go on wit it. I feel a spirit comin on. Kick the truth around some more.
:: goes into spiritual convulsions::

excellent thread - the quality of which has been sorely missed of late on this forum....
- jox0
so true ex, and very good ideas about the mocks. A white lie won't do any harm, and in this case it's great for showing off skills you normally wouldn't get to.
As an employer I would even encourage it, if you're a great designer but lacks pieces to prove it.
Wow, this turned into the "sales resource thread". Nice! :)
