does anyone know where i can find standard rates/fees for web consulting services?
what do you charge if this is a service you offer?

I charge $40 an hour

i estimate it's effective value to the client.. to what extend it makes him take the right decisions etc. etc.
i quit calculating hourly rates last year.
i know it doesn't help, but i can tell hourly rates can break you up at some point in the future.. think about it!!

i totally agree Dutchboy. i'm just wondering about industry standard rates so i can justify what i plan on charging my client if the hourtly rate issue arises.

jevad - i think $40/hr is really low for consultation. i was thinking around $150-$200 minimum.

jeez....don't price yourself out of anything - that's a lot of money - what's your background?
- DutchBoy0
i think in any case if you use hourly rate you should definatly not go any lower then about 55 euros, that's about 65 dollars.
for bigger projects/clients and more experience in the field you can take the step to go 100$ and higher.

dang...I guess I am selling myself short a little...oh well....

jevad - i have about 8 years web experience. consultation generally demands higher rates in all fields. 1 hour of good consultation can save a company tons of money.
- jevad0
true...just out of interest - what kind of topics do you consult on?

"design slavery"
>:D

jevad - i actually haven't consulted much. that's why i'm curious about rates.

gotcha.
i've done mostly usability consulting myself...easy money...especialyl because most of the time it's for companies with teh worst websites ever...

TOtally, usability consulting is easy money...but definitely not worth $150-200 unless your name is Anderson or Price. If you're swimming with those sharks, that's a different story and, in my opinion, a waste of a lot of perfectly happy trees.
Consulting rates are variable, but I'd say in the $75-$125 range, with $125 being some heavy shit.
Also, in the consulting world, you have projects and you have budgets. You can budget all you want, but if the project blows out, so does your reputation. In the end, you pretty much always put out more than you budgeted for...that's the game.

You should definitely charge more. Our company charges $250/hr for almost everything. And we consistently get it. But if I were freelance consulting, i'd charge a lot less... probably around 150-200. The thing is, consulting should be based around ROI. So if you can make the client lots of cash, then the money they pay you is worth it.
sometimes if we have a solution that will produce a lot of return, we'll bill based partly on commission. that way if we make them a mil, we get a percentage of it.
businesses are used to this expense too. don't think about it like how you pay your graphic designers.
